Title: A Sad Day for the Valver
Post by: Goops on 07 January 2011, 11:34
Hi Guys,

The time has come..

I was doing about 70mph yesterday on the motorway, approaching a roundabout, slowed down and suddenly, no power and dash lights on.
Had a look in the engine bay, the starter wasnt kicking and no power to engine.. a long story short, got towed to a garage nearby, put her on the ramp and not good news.. A bolt on the crank pulley had snapped (how random!) and the cambelt went out of sync
Put a new bolt in place and realigned all the belts etc and no turn, compression test failed, valves bent for sure..

After a 5 hour wait i managed to get the car towed home and it seems like an end of the road for the poor girl.  :undecided:
Plan is to break it for bits on the drive or scrap it, unless someone is interested in a project .. will need headwork or one for the ABF fetish crew. Other than this, the car is sound and has been looked after very well, tonnes of receipts to prove this. If anyone is interested, please get in touch with me: Car is based in West london, near Heathrow.

With the current economic climate and redundancies at work, i really cant justify spending money on the engine work  matey  :undecided:
VR6 and other engine options are again putting money into the car dude!

FIX IT U NOOB!!!! its your pride and joy mate. its going to cost you £200-£400 for a rebuilt head but shouldnt be nower near £400 if your going to put it back together yourself. this is the time it calls for team for from the golf members! i know what you mean my car was sound when it went into the garage for a waterpump change and then next day the valves where bent! for a whole month i was without a car had to go over 7miles to work. thanks to some people who offered to pick me up half way there and drop me back off. this was early this year (cold & snow) misses was 6months or more into her pregnancy lucky my sister lent me her car, it was stressful. but i gave the car to a cousine of mine who is a well know mechanic who got the head off & sent away and rebuilt with new things in the head. a week later after he having it, the car was ready for new life! or you could just a buy a 2nd hand head and stick that on?

keep your head up mate!

Sharki i hear you but its a hard decision I am having to make. I would rather this car to go to an enthusiast who can bring her back to her glory!
The car is on genuine g60 steel wheels, fk silverline damping adjust suspension, g60 topmounts and few other goodies.
I had the bonnet and the boot panels resprayed last year too

I need to have a word with a mate first. Whereabouts roughly in west London? Trying to figure out if A) I can afford it and b) if logistically I can get it back to somewhere to do an engine swap.

Your looking at this the wrong way. Now is the time to abf it yourself and love the car more than ever.its the economical answer, its not worth much with a broken engine..every cloud has a silver lining and all that

Save it before the hyenas get it

If you change a crank bolt on a MK2 to a MK1 one, it would streach rather than snap, its the first thing I do on any old golf! The metal is better on a MK1 for some reason?

So let me get this right your car is the one on the strip next to the TT and from reading your old posts I think it is. You are going to break it! I would personally Ebay it to the highest bid if you can not afford to fix it. I would help out but not had a 16v engine now for years. surely can source a complete engine off ebay for £100 or so and some one must be able to help you locally to fit it. Engine into a MK2 is far easier than replacing the head and cheaper.
I would say pm me "best price" but as I stated we dont have an engine for it and after the last two mk2 gti's I have bought to restore I am banned from buying them unless I can see it in the flesh first.
I hope it is restored and not broken for bits as good ones are getting rare. Break all the horrors out there by all means but a car worthy of actually being at gti international and calander material is worth more than bean cans.
End of the day though it is your car and up to you what you do with it

Ello Ladies,

Yup the very same golf from gti robiwill.
I would probably fork out for an engine, if it had warranty and there was a reliable mechanic around here but abit stumped at the moment with redundancy etc.

I have alot of history in this car and have got almost everything replaced e.g:
Distributor, rotor
Ht leads
Waterpump
Header Tank and blue cap
Thermostat, Rad Switch, Radiator
Clutch (Sach Sports), Push rod, clutch&speedo cables
Gear Linkeage Repair, Uprated relay Shaft Bush
Starter Motor
Oil Cooler
PAS Belt and Cambelt
FK konigsport damping adjust suspension, g60 topmounts
Genuine Door Handles
Infinty Kappa front speakers
All the usual crap that goes wrong with a typical mk2!!

Some pics when cleaned

Last month some knob did key the passenger wing, surface and not deep:

i think you think about this as its a beatifull car and its defo worth keeping. it would be a shame to see this go just because of a few bent valves when it can be fixed relatively cheply its not worth getting rid of it in anger because it has failed you its still got mint bodywork ( besides the key mark ) and sounds like a great chassis too. and could u live with thinking what if ???

that means driveing down to london for the fun of it you muppet.

the car isn't worth a trip to go and look at it,  so you get a few piccys to get an idea that its sound enough then go with a trailer to look and come back with it if it's ok.
