Title: Oil issue !!

Hi ALL
ok striaght to it ! A while ago i killed my mk2 gti 16v on a track because of a oil problem.
Everything was going fine then there was a buzzing noise and an oil warning , as simple as that , bottom end gone etc etc
What caused that ? and how do i stop it from happening again on the track ??

could be oil pump, blocked oil pick up, but if oil temp is high then it will struggle to lube and cool engine, you will need to look at an auxilary oil cooler and sandwich plate takeoff to keep oil temps down.
ask dannyp or DH they will give some good advice  :wink:

thanks i will do that , when the engine was switched off and restarted it would be fine again !? maybe the pump might of been starved in the corners ?
all i know is it caused a royal pain in the arse !

MK2 oil sump baffle is not good in keeping the oil central when cornering hard.

Going on a slight tangent here would it be possible to put a dividing plate in the sump then split two pipes off the oil pump to either side so it always picks up oil?

no,  the pump will pull from the pipe that offers least resistance, air flows easyer than oil so you would just double the chance of sucking up air.

as for fixing the problem, drop the sump check the pump pickup, try it again with some reasonable 10-40 semi synth.

you should see about 4 bar at fast idel COLD,   around 1 bar at idel when it's HOT.

when the engine is HOT raise the revs and the oil pressure should climb from 1 bar at idel to 4 bar by 2-2500rpm and hold there.   

if it dosent the pump or bottom end are fubar as you did it on a track the oil starvation probaly happend under heavy load so damage is much more likely than if it happend on the road,  if it dosent give the right numbers ether try a new pump or pop a bearing cap and look. 

big ends are easyest to pop and tell a tale.  worn mains will oil starve the big ends they are also more stressed so wear shows more
