Mk 1 = 6,986,458

Mk 2 = 6,301,000

Mk 3 = 4,805,900

What a waste of metal

What was number 1, as I know vw made around 30 million beetles or something like that!?

I guess the larger production run of the earlier cars is down to a longer production lifespan and less competitors in their class for consumers to choose from?

I would guess the mk1 figures include the citi Golf as well.

Would also be interesting to see how many are left these days.

no3 Lady Riva and n04 Fiat Uno wtf.

Quick wikipedia search tells me only 291,497 mk2 Sciroccos were produced  (504,153 mk1's)

Divide the figure by the time each model was produced for and it might.

Surely more Golfs have been produced compared to the Beetle if you add up those figures as one model it exceeds the 21.5 mil for the Beetle?!

There was more than one variation of the Beetle.

Not sure it does to be honest as that was never technically a mk1 golf.... however the citi only got to about 380,000 or si in numbers...

I kind of get what you're saying and although the beetle did have various changes over the years the overall shape never really changed. where as a golf MK1 and golf mk6 are very different cars.

Mmmm but still the same model name, a Golf is a Golf whatever year and the same applies to a Beetle.  I doubt there is much that can be swapped over between a late 40's Split and a late 70s 1303.  Different engine, different suspension front and rear, different brake system different body panels, different glass, just to name the obvious stuff.

I think its a bit of fix then if you look at it this way then... Toyota Corolla at 35 million - The first car to achieve thirty million sales. ford escort over 20 million, fiat uno over 8 million.  and all these figures inluding the golf vary depending on where you look!

Yeah I seem to remember the Beetle production figure being surpassed a while ago but couldn't remember what or when.

Also forgot about the 'new' Beetle, should that be included on the production run or should it be in the Golf's figures :undecided:

Why is life so complicated

It's info like this that should be easily found on manufacturers websites as surely they know the correct figures and we can decide for ourselves how we read them?

Yet somehow it once managed to claim the title of European Car Of The Year!  must be due to some of those classic special editions they released.  Who can forget the rare versions like these:

Pure class... plenty more where these came from.. at least another 6 or 7!

Do you not think it was worth the 'European Car Of The Award'? What do you think should have claimed that title back in 1992?

After some reading in other sections of vortex it's kinda funny how in the UK the mk3 gets all the hate but over there the mk4 gets all the hate. Time to go find the part of the world that hates the mk2 and the mk5

They got clever with it once, they even did a model with active rear wheel steering IIRC.
