Title: Front Mk3 Lights
Post by: xtetx on 04 January 2011, 20:14
Hey Guys,

I have seen a lot of golfs with the Mark 4 style light, is this because the mark 4 light fits straight in to the MK3 or does it need a modification?

Cheers

They don't fit at all

You'll need Mk4 style headlights which you can buy from various places online

There is a diy guide in the mk3 maintenance section that bored welsh lad posted for fitting mk4 lights.
The guide is for mk4 style headlights, not standard mk4 lights.
Mk4 style lights are easily found on ebay or in the classifieds here or on most websites that sell after-market gear.
It's worth noting that you CAN fit actual mk4 headlights but doing so needs a full mk3.5 cabrio front end conversion. Or a mk3.5 cabrio

I agree with jimp, If you want a mk4 look front end you can fit a mk3.5 cab front end you will need the bonnet, front wings, bumper and grill.  As dom said I do not think the mk4 lights will fit with a standard mk3 front end. Also the guide it looks like they are mk4 lights with a standard mk3 front end, but there is a lot of modification to the front pannel.

The guide is definitely for mk4 style lights as his picture of the finished product is of mk4 style lights:

The mods to make it fit are because the North American market mk3s have different mounting positions to EU mk3s and the mk4 style lights are made with EU mountings.

You defo cannot put Mark 4 headlights onto a Mark 3. I know because I tried it years ago. I cut out the headlamp surrounds, managed to secure them in place, fitted the grill around them. Stood back and it looked good. Then when I put the bonnet down they are the wrong shape and the bonnet will not shut by a good half inch. They will not fit and Mark 4 style are the only way.
