Well, the time has come to move out the parents and in to a trendy apartment to live a little. I'm not going to need my car
in the city (maybe get something stupidly cheap and slow at a later date) so I'm probably going to sell it.
Its a 98 mk3 8v gti in mystic blue and I bloody love the thing, even though it doesn't like going in to gear. So my question is this....
How much does a 'dodgy gearbox' devalue the car? And is it worth whacking a new one for the sale? Its in very good condition for a mk3
but it has no service history (On a side note i know it was well serviced just lost ALL books and paperwork in one fail swoop)
Any help apprech

Just scrap it.

Should be worth around £400 / £500 as spares or repairs.

I feel for you here as i did the same but then it was important for my car
on a serious note, bet its just your linkages in need of a service, sort that then sell it.

+1 with a knackered gearbox and no history your looking at about this tbh.
-
Do the queerbox as a last favour to the car. At least if you cock it up you have done the favour to the next owner of removing it

That's ok, I didn't expect to get a lot for it. Its a shame about the history, its such a good, honest car...which is getting rare these days!
Ive had all sorts of VW's with all sorts of engines and most people turned their nose up when I said I was getting a mk3 but its actually been
one of the best! And I feel like punching those people in the face.
I might end up part exing it to put towards my boring car

What? You're getting another mk3?

you can get the mileage history from the cvla website atr least that covers it back to approx 2006 mosyt people will be happy with that on an old mk3 unless its a minter done less than 70K I wouldnt pay anyone to fit on as wont add the same value on top. Unless you can fit one yourself in which case its worth it.As most people say ebay £500 spares repair. Lasst two we have bought needing boxes have paid alot less for though.

My dad or brother can fit the gearbox thankfully. Just means gearbox @ £100 plus whatever a new clutch is and clutch cable.

i think £500 for an 8v with a knackered box is a bit optimistic personally.

Looking at the car market at the moment this is not a good time to sell! I'm not in a rush so will keep my eye on the
market and sell when people have got another wage or two after xmas  Only problem is I don't have the £100
spare to buy a gearbox at the mo ergh :undecided:
