Title: Alternator noise

Hi, got a whinning coming from the alternator area of the engine. The VW garage said it was the alternator, so i replaced it, which has improved the lights alot which is great but the noise is still there.

Any ideas as to what the noise could be, alternator belt or cam belt. Alternator belt is fairly new and the cam belt should of been replaced as it was serviced at VW until about 90,000 miles.

could be the belt is slightly misaligned? Is it an 8v or 16v?

Edit, meant to say when was the water pump changed last as you mentioned cambelt

Ok, defo an 8v then. When was the waterpump last changed? Have you ever tried the mechanics stethascope trick?

Could be the cam belt tensioner or belt too tight.
