What were the engine sizes you could get in cabs. The reason i ask is because the wife is learning to drive and id like to get her an old cab for her 1st car. However im not sure if she could get insured. Just wondered if they did a small engine like a 1 litre?
-
Smallest Size was 1.6GL I believe
-
yeah the smallest engine mk 1 cab was the 1.6 gl they basically had the old 1.6 Gti engine in before they up graded it to a 1.8i you should be able to get classic insurance tho! sometimes you can find some mk 1 cab with smaller engines but they have had engine replacements and are not standard! hope this helps jeff

My first cab was a 1982 1.5l GL engine code JB this was a carb engine fitted to the early cars from about 1979-1983 and was the smallest engine they ever fitted to cabriolets.
-
Yeah mines a GLi, the GTi cab was released 1 or 2 yrs later (than 1980), and had a 1.8 engine which was only 2 bhp more powerful if i remember correctly.
doesnt make hardly any difference to the insurance group tho.

What do you need to go under classic insurance. Can a new driver get classic insurance? Does anyone have a rough guess how much a new driver would pay for insurance? Female 22
-
Im 22 and the classic insurance didnt really make a difference to mine.
Just try the usual ring around technique. My best quote with 0 NCB was around a grand

lady's do tend to get cheaper insurance even with no claims bonus! classic insurance does limit the mileage you can do a year! not quite sure as im only 21! but it does reduce the insurance cost by loads! as people who i know who have classic insurance pay roughly 350 maybe less a year fully comped! but this is not exact

I've got the camper on classic insurance and that's about ?225 a year for a limited 5,000 mileage but it's modified all over with disc brakes and 17" alloys etc but I know people who pay about ?130 for a stock camper, I know it's not a golf but you get the idea. I don't think you can use your NCB though when you get a classic insurance. :undecided:
Best way for you mk2GTI2.016v would be to insure it yourself as classic insurance with your wife as a named driver.

I met a guy at a show once and he had an early cabbie and he reckoned it was a 1.5
-
I think they did do them in 1.5 guise in the first couple of years.
-
Yeah he said that there weren't many made. His was in yellow, don't see many cabbies in that colour do you!
-
Not many. A lass called Vix who used to come on here a bit ago had a smart yellow cab.
-
here we go found one one abay item number 4530100153 its a 1.5 gl and its yellow 1980 model so that settles it they did make 1.5 golf! well that showed me :embarassed:
-
That must be the one that I saw at Malvern a few years ago. It was in really good condition with a wber carb.
Hey mate, I wouldn't believed that they made a 1.5 if I hadn't seen that one
-
I had a 1.5 GL cab back in 1994, good little runner it was with only 4 gears though.... :( not many of them around anymore and becoming rare.
-
didnt realise they were rare? if only i had the money? their room for aqnother car on the drive but im skint
