Title: Rear wiper problem
Post by: Snooze on 03 January 2011, 15:48
Every now and again when I start my car, the rear wiper will start going.  This happens despite me not even having the auto wipers engaged?!  I have to turn the car off and on again to stop it.  Can anyone help?  Many thanks

This happens on my Mk5 GTI but only if I have auto wipers on and select reverse.

I'm pretty sure I have previously read about a common problem on the Mk5's of this happening at startup even with auto wipers off.

Can't remember the fix. Maybe someone with more experience can adivse you better.

My rear wiper had a mind of it's own and would start wiping when I started the car reagardless of if I had auto wipers active or not.  It would only stop when I switched the car off.  It's a known problem with the rear wiper motor and I had it replaced under warranty.

Mine does it but only if on auto wiper...turn that off and see if different.  No point going in and looking daft when they knock the auto wiper off and say 1/2 hr labour for checking

As I stated in my post, the wiper goes off when I don't have the auto wipers engaged.  Plus my car is under warranty so I wont be looking like an idiot, or paying for it.

If your gonna try and give some advice, at least read the post first.

I thought this was a common problem and the fix for it was a new rear wiper motor.

As your car is under warranty, I'd just get it changed. :smug:

Nah it's all good fella, "help AND sarcasm since 02" nothing taken personally

If its any consolation today was spent sorting seized front wiper linkage on the missuss mk4...saved a fair few pounds tho!

Good luck on the fix for yours

Finally got round to getting my rear wiper looked at at VW garage today.  As advised by you guys, a new wiper motor was diagnosed!  Thanks to everyone for their comments.
