Title: Can a mk3 alternator replace a mk2?

I need a new alternator for my F reg GTI 8v (digi) and I have a free alternator I can get hold of from a '98 mk3 GTI 8v.

Simple question, will this work as a direct replacement?

No the belts are different. Not straight swap but you could use a full mk3 setup if you get mk3 belt and other pulleys. Not sure if the cog knocks off the end or interchanges
