Yeah I did both, easiest way i found was using some curverd snips to get the majority out then tidied up with a dremel/sandpaper. Took around half hour

+1 on angle grinder

Tbh saw little or no difference from smoothing the whole thing..

smoothing the box can cause stale air and reduce low down torque, making your car SLOWER

i know its a different car but on my old astra td i was told to smooth the airbox and take out restriction pipes to make it quicker, i tried it and at the hill at bottom of my street i put my foot down and was just changing to 2nd gear as i approached the top, but when i put it back to standard i was reaching 3rd gear as i hit the top, more power and better mpg with the oe setup

has anyone ever tested smooth v oe on a dyno? only ones ive seen have been oe vs dsg, smooth and filter in one go

duly noted and understood, but the bits stuck out in the lower half are purely webbing for the plastic cast, nothing else. Might leave the top half as it looks a bit fiddly and I'm feeling lazy

anyone know what the trumpet does? At a guess makes it quieter?

i think as Rich says it does make it quieter to but also acts as a smoother so to speak to funnel the air smoothly into the opening of the maf

I just used pliers on the bottom section, as soon as you started to bend the plastic it snapped off flush

Also fitted 76mm air intake duct which you cant really see

Yes, smooths and straightens the airflow a bit like stacks/trumpets do on carbs, also helps the torque a little.  Though the difference is probably not noticeable in day to day driving.
