Title: DSG Gearbox 1st Gear
Post by: Jamied281 on 03 January 2011, 09:52
Hi Guys

Need a bit of help, Im Just in the process of buying a MK6 GTI with DSG, i used to have a MK5 R32 man so don't know much about the DSG setup.
I test drove the MK6 at the local VW dealer, and as i was coming up to the end of the test drive i noticed that it was selecting 1st very harshly from standstill, then when coming to a standstill it nearly stalled.
I told them that if i was to go any further they will need to investigate. Its an 09 plate 12k registered in May 2years warranty left. Its got all the options i want on it and the right colour so hoping it can be sorted. any idea's what the problem might be? as they have initially said this sat for pick up and i according to some posts this could take a while to sort.

Cheers for any help

Jay

If its the Car you want and has the right spec then i would buy, but they need to sort out DSG box first.

You still have 2yrs warrenty

You could  have a new box put it in ??

Steve would you buy knowing it had a faulty DSG?
That is your heart ruling your head and lethal when it comes to buying a car.
I know I certainly wouldn't regardless of a 2 year warranty or not.
Every time your car is in the dealers there is every chance that they could break something else.
If they fix it before hand then that is a different matter

I'll be driving it before I sign any papers to check the fault has gone, plus I'm going to get the service manager to sign to say it's been fixed. If it's still the same, in the words of a famous Nole Edmounds show "no deal" !

Yes I would buy it no problems , but as I said it would need to be fixed good and proper!!. I would pay an independent Tec to have it checked ! Dsg's do go wrong and people get scared off I agree but still has 2 year warrenty left.

Sorry I must have misread you then as I thought you were saying buy it as it had the spec he was looking for plus had a 2 years warranty to fix the problems!!

Like I said I certainly wouldn't buy. Especially since there will always be another one just around the corner.

Hello and welcome to the forum

The DSG box should be very smooth and not shudder especially this latest version, I like everyone above wouldn't accept the car until it's been sorted, although it may not be the gearbox itself causing the problem,

Regards changing the box if it is that, I had the dsg box changed in a caddy van I bought for work and the good news is that they did such a good job that you would never tell it had been done

£21k for a DSG GTI, that's a good price as I've not seen any that cheap from a VW Main Dealer.  If it were me I'd be concerned over the issue with the DSG. My DSG is nothing but smooth and the nuts, I love DSG, glad I got one.  Using it in manual mode is just superb and the noise the car makes when you shift is very addictive.

I think that only applies in the US of A.

Jay,

Not sure if this helps. I bought a new DSG GTi in Sept 09 and very soon experienced similar symptoms to those you described on your test drive. Very jumpy when 1st engaged and anything but smooth in stop-start traffic. Got worse the more warmed up the car was.

After a couple of visits to the dealer, I had to have the whole DSG box replaced. They said it was due to the mechanotronic unit overheating. They said it wasn't an uncommon fault on the earlier Mk6 DSG boxes.

Not sure if that helps but might be worth a mention?

VW replaced the manual clutch in my mk5 TDI 3 times under warranty.

I didn't want to take a chance with the new car, so thought I'd order DSG. Oops!

Daz the demon clutch killer

... I wondered that too. :undecided:

VW manual clutches are just made of cheese. The dealer eventually admitted it. Said he was replacing several each week.

I am hoping that the DSG clutches are better.

Had my first car for 6 years with no clutch issues. 2nd car for 6 months - rolled it through a hedge issue :embarassed: 3rd car for 8 years with no clutch issue. 4th car Mk5 TDI golf on its third clutch - 4 years. 5th car will be Golf GTD with DSG - looks like I have to keep my fingers crossed that I get a good clutch again :undecided:

Hey, cheers for all the reply's. Just had word back and they think its the Mechantronics unit just waiting for confirmation. If it is will this solve the problem? and are the new units more reliable than the early 09's?

I fear DSG will spell the end of a lot of cars in the future with the cost of repair.

Jay, it's Col again. I mentioned about my DSG box being replaced due to the over-heating mechanotronix unit. Just (hopefully) to put you mind at rest, I have had no problems whatsoever since the replacement - works lilke a dream!

The Techs at VW have come back and said there going to replace the mechantronics, is this a good thing? Or should I push to get the whole box replaced? I was thinking if they only replace the mech unit getting them to put a new 3yr warranty on the whole car. It's a tough call, need your experience guys. Cheers in advance

[
/quote]Trust me run a mile. I would be very suprised if changing the mech unit adressed the problem. I had mine changed on a brand new one last March. It didnt solve the problem, i gave it back, they still have it now, still on sale. I bought an s3 auto, same box,no problems. If you can find a good one, and you will for shure, then snap it up. Its a grest toy. Who wants to be using a stick in this day n age.

I had the mech unit replaced on my last R32 (similar problems) and everything was fine after that ... no more problems and a much smoother DSG.  No need for a new DSG box IMO.

So you should be all sorted now ... good luck with the purchase if you go for it
