Oh yeah walchy my New 075 bosch hasn't made a difference to the slow start. My starter motors new as well...hmmm?? My toad alarm led flickers on startup, then gives me 9 red flashes, which I can't find out what means anywhere, but I'm thinkin its a low voltage/ bad earth sign..keep me posted with your workings

I put a new starter on 6 months back, it had the cog on the end, is this the bush you mean?

No, the bush is like a copper hula hoop that is inserted into the bell housing.
Title: Advice on 16v starting issue please
Post by: walchy01 on 12 February 2011, 19:26
Still not resolved this bloody dodgy starting issue, replaced the copper o ring where it connects to the gear box as it was significantly coroded well none existant to be honest
I was absolutley sure that was the issue, put everything back on yesterday and still no bloody joy....

Just as a reminder to the fault, the car tries to turn over but really really slowly as though i have a flat battery and i have not got a flat battery, it then sort of jumps into life and starts quickly  :undecided:

Would you now....

1. Get your starter motor refurbed??
2. Take it to an auto electrician?
3. Burn the car out because your as pissed of as i am???

Really would appreciate further help, dont like the thing not running, it is only the 3rd car but i hate not to see it on the road cos i love driving it.....

Thank you once more

I had this on my mk3. New battery didn't sort it, neither did cleaning all the earths. Eventually the starter motor packed up and I had to replace it. Combined with a new battery and clean earths, a working starter motor feels like a new car turning on!

If you have jump leads (heavy duty prefrably) use one of the leads connected to the -ve of the battery and to the starter case then try and start it see if its any better. also you could test the +ve side the same way. it will prove the starter is fooked or the earth or +ve connections are weak.

Mine used to be slow to not turning over when the engine was warm until i cleaned the contacts on the starter.

It doesnt turn over fast now but it fires straight away and these are high compression engines

Update....
Starter motor was in a very very poor way, usually brought on by poor treatment...starting gear, running with low fuel??? Etc... Anyway fully refurbed  including bell house bush, bargain price of £30 to the trade
Let's hope now that when I refit it the bloody thing turns over otherwise I will be pissed off
