Well, it took me about 8 hours and cost me several ratchets and sockets but I finally got the new shocks and springs on. It looks a little high at the front but Im a family man now and the overall look is good enough for me. Theyre G max (35 - 40mm) shocks and springs which after buying I read loads of horror stories about but after a bit of a test drive it feels damn good to me. Infact, I had read that they had a horribly stiff ride but IMO the ride is a little soft if anything. The car needs a clean but heres a quick pic.

Ive definitely got the bug for doing stuff to it now, thinking of a steering wheel next.

Can deffo see the difference mate looks spot on miness not silly low tbh not even sure how low mine is but the chap got the height just right for daily driving. What I would say though is get the camber done pretty quickly they should do he tracking when they camber it and have a look at your track rod ends as 9 times out of 10 they seize solid I just bought some new ones as there cheap and the chap fitted them and re-cambered the car.If you dont get it done your tyres will last about a week

Looks loads better Mate and a job well done. My next move would be a deep chin front splitter (not calling it a VR splitter after the big debate last year ). This would compliment the lowering and give it a better look and is a nice cheap easy mod for you. Think you'll agree though well worth all your effort. All you need now is an extra couple of doors for the little un
-
Make sure you get a deep chin spoiler off Eurowagens ... my £20 replica from their has taken one hell of a beating and its flawless. The stuff bends, and is a SOLID fit.
-
Theyre only £20  Thats cheaper than I was expecting, might order one now! Anyone got a link?
-
Loads better :afro:

-
Looks way better, keep up the good work.

Thanks chaps! It is actually a good feeling when people say they like it after nearly giving up doing it yesterday. Got cuts all over my hands and a box full of broken tools.
I checked the bank balance earlier and dont think I'll be ordering a splitter just yet but it can go on the to-do list.

I ran G max shocks and springs on my old mk2 for over a year
very impressed.
and looks alot better
-
Looks great - just the right hieght, wish i could do mine just like that, Top Job
-
Looks miles better :afro:
-
Looks muchhhh better mate!
I am feeling that you will get the bug to drop it further
Standard VR splitter ftw! The rigidity is unrivalled!
Forget the debate! Most Nubs like me refer to it as a VR splitter!
-
To be strictly aerodynamically correct it's not a splitter, it's an air dam but that's just me being techy and dull
Interesting to see someone getting on ok with a GMax kit. I ran their 20mm drop kit very, very briefly. Just didn't work properly, ended up far too low (lower than yours on the -40mm kit ) and stiff for an everyday car and also had tyre rubbing issues. Still a mystery what they actually supplied but anyhow, I'm all Bilsteined up now and much happier.

It seems to be very hit and miss with the G max kits, I was quite worried after Id read reviews on the internet and before Id fitted em, seems good so far though.
Did you find bilstein alot better?
-
Don't want to be a party pooper but have you declared the lowering to your insurance company yet ??
-
Not yet, its due for renewal next week though so all we be declared then. Direct line dont insure modified cars either so Im gonna have to change. Hopefully sorting it out tonight.
-
I'm going to say it..took your bloody time!!!
Fair play, it looks miles better :afro:

I ended up running standard springs with Bilstein B4 dampers so she's not lowered but now it's all run in I reckon she's settled to quite a nice stance. As for the ride/handling balance, I'm happy with it for an everyday road car. It's just a bit stiffer and sharper than standard without being harsh.
On the subject of insurance, see what Footman James have to say. My 'Valver is currently on a classic policy with them. They also look after my Mini Thou' and seem relatively unfazed by the concept of it being modified.
