I have a Mk2 16v 1989
Which has an erratic idle
Checked manual - idle valve not buzzing & resistance to it is incorrect. The manual says the control unit is behing the central console. Is this in the car or under the flimsy plastic rain deflector on the bulkhead?
Cheers

The control unit is behind the centre console. Is there no power to the valve itself?

Idle Control Stabilization Unit or something. About the size of two boxes of ciggys.
To test - unplug and see if the problems gets worse or better. Another symptom of the unit being dead is that when cold it won't idle properly, making you keep your foot on the accelerator until warm. (Bit tricky when braking).
If it is that unit, they cost 180 quid new - but offer anyone broken 16v owner 20 quid for theres. There is a saving to be made ;-)

Make absolutely sure yours is dead, they are expensive and you can quite often fix 'em by just cleaning them:-

There are two schools of thought on this one.
First is the mechanical unit that richandhazel just mentioned which is everyones first port of call, the second is this electrical control unit in the cabin.
Dont get them confused ;-)
