Title: It's just a golf
Post by: Jimmymature on 31 December 2010, 17:06
I know i'm only new to this forum but I don't get why GTD's are spoken about in the same breath as a GTI.  I have an A3 TDI S-Line as well as my GTI but would expect people to talk about it in the S3 forums.....

Or am I just being miserable or not getting it?

I'm actually a fan of the GTD! Would upgrade the Mrs to the GTD from her GT Sport, but gonna probably get a Tiguan to cope with the snow.

If that were the case where are all the Bluemotion Golf owners on this forum

My A3 170 tdi quattro is quicker than the GTD and i don't consider it a "Performance Car" I'm not knocking the GTD, it is indeed a very nice car but on this forum the GTI and GTD are almost blending........

The GTI / GTD / R are marketed together as the performance range of the golf Linky: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new/golf-gti-vi Audi S3 and SLines are not.

The GTI & GTD are virtually identical bar the engines, Audi S3 and SLines are not.

Does this help?

The GTI is the performance petrol golf. The GTD is the performance diesel golf.

Have you had a look on the VW website? They have a section called GTI/GTD/R.

Personally, a choice between a GTD and a GTI Golf is better than to choose from:
Astra 1.9 CDTI v VXR (or even a Astra 2.0l Petrol)
Focus TDI v Focus ST (or even RS as 300bhp is a lot for FWD)
A3 TDI v S3
Zim zimmer - 1-Series Diesel v 1-Series 3.0l

Can't compare Mini's, as they aren't available in 5-door etc.

There aren't many small/med-sized cars out there, in terms of overall package, that you can compare to a Golf (have you not seen the advert!?).
But, again, this is a personal opinion....

My opinion also.
I needed a car which was not enormous as parking is very tight at work (), but was comfortable, fast, elegant, had a premium feel etc., etc.
So I bought the GTI. There is not much else around that fits this bill IMO.

I love my Golf, had it just over a week and I'm constantly looking for reasons to go out in it

However, the world has gone mad for sure.

When asked what car I have ordered I usually just say, "... a GTD which is a diesel version of a GTI."

How many owners refer to their car as just a golf? Or do you refer to it as a golf GTD? Or do you refer to it as just a GTD?

The 3 three letters GTI are an iconic brand on their own. Most people hear those letters and think fast golf.

So was/is R32. It is a pity that the new golf R won't have that. You can't really say that you drive an R without the word golf.

Though the R32 was more of a boys car. Here is a true story. The missus brother bought a new car just after I ordered the GTD. She told me he bought a golf the same as mine which is a mk5 TDI. I was speaking to her father and he said these exact words, "he bought an R three two." I immediately corrected him that it was an R thirty two.

So as far my missus is concerned the R32 is "just a golf".

I'm a "Golf" or "Golf GTD" kinda guy to be honest.

Day to day I'd say golf but if someone asks "what kind of golf is that" I'd say a "Golf GTD".

When people ask me what car I drive, I say a Golf. The answer is usually sufficient and they reply: Nice.

I just say a GTI.

When I say GTI, they look at me and ask, what's that? I then have to say it's a fast Golf. It still does not register, so I normally give up and show them the car. It is quite wonderful to see their eyes widen. Then they want to sit in it. Now this is not something I encourage as they start fiddling with everything. The final reaction, oooooh, what lovely seats! Job done!

I just say 'GTi' as well.

My lad wants to be taken to school in the 'GTi' rather than the £40k Merc on the drive.

His mates ( 11 yrs old btw ) know him as the boy who's dad has a black 'GTi'

He is proud of that !

Yes I did bite on that comment, well nearly

Its a Sad, sad day when a non inflattamory comment which was actually a quote taken from a previous post in this thread is removed by the moderator who also happens to be GTD driver. Quotes was : "... a GTD which is a diesel version of a GTI."

The GTD owners have taken over this forum, not the place I wanted it to be when i joined 18 months ago.

Sorry guys, I am off.

Please don't go spartacus. There is a dedicated diesel section now.

The GTD was around years ago (mk1 , mk 2 I think).

For the mk 6 VW renamed the GT 160 (or 170) diesel to GTD. It's nothing new just clever marketing from VW as they realise how popular and iconic the GTI is.

If I had to buy a diesel for whatever reason then it would be a Mk6 GTD.
