Anyone know if its possible to fit aftermarket LED DRL's on the golfs (i.e. a bit like the R's) ??
I've seen a picture somewhere on one of the German formums of a GTI with a curved LED DRL's fitted which looked really nice but I'm buggered if I can find it.
-
Not seen them but there easy to wire up if you can find some to fit.
I was waiting for a firm who do them for the mk5 GTI to produce some for the mk6.

EDIT
There is also

I do agree something like the R's would be great.

Those Mk5 ones do look good

You meen, as your link sort of scrambles things.
Or do you meen the complete lamp units it loads up a photo of? As i have seen them on UK ebay.

As per your post snoopy I was thinking along the lines of something like this.....

Maybe these Phillips ones would fit?? They got a good review in Autoexpress.

Ah ha... I've found the pictures of the modded mk6 gti with the led's which look like there set into the honeycomb grille...... now these I like!!

What i was thinking was the top slat of the grill next to the fog light a smoked one similar to the golf R but its that space is only 14cm x 2.5cm
There are legal minimum heights for DRL that were on the hella website. LINK (http://www.daytime-running-light.com/UK/picture/downloads/anbau_vorschriften/J00154_TFL_Broschuere_GB.pdf)

They look abit like the HELLA day time running light LEDay flex

I think that link is quite confusing the way they have set out where the lights are permitted.
Looking at the maximum hight the lights can it looks as if they must be below the headlights.
Yet the maximum height is 1500mm or do they mean it must be under the headlight up to a maximum height of 1500mm? If so then they must have different regs for lights actually in the headlights i.e. the Golf

This is what i want

^You can buy those off ebay.

I think these would work well, would need some work to get them to fit but much better than ebay special headlights IMHO.
These can be got for a pretty good price at Euro Car Parts too (plus 20% off this month with code JAN20), £91 delivered

On the Phillips website theres a 'Try before you buy option' where you can download a front picture of your car and paste the LEDs on......
So here's one I made earlier with Phillps Daylight 4's
(http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab242/WITHCOMBEM/mk6led2.jpg)
-
Nice
Given those grilles are only £19 each from VW I think it would be worth buying a set to modify to fit the philips LED's

Be good if you could fit them inside the fog light itself so the car gets some nice glowing fangs!
I'm not 100% sold on them but they've got to look better than the yellow DRLs on the non Xenon equipped cars (I turned my DRLs off as they look like dirty teeth).

That answered my next questions
"How much are the grills, are they seperate to the main grill, how do they come off?"

Thats similar to what i was thinking but them a bit higher on that grill in the first slot.
Its the angle of these grills i was concerned with as it will but the lights at a angle.
I also fancied smoked DRLs which i have seen, that way when its parked it will look more oem rather than an extra light unit fitted.
-
I noticed as I walked past a merc today that they have these boomerang shapped LED DRL's which are surface mounted over the honeycomb section. These look very nice imo. I wonder if the merc ones could be retrofited over the middle front honeycomb section on the GTI??

Looking at the front grille today it looks like a right nightmare to remove?? Anyone done this? Maybe you need to remove the whole bumber to push the grille out from the inside?
-
Don't know about the GTI / GTD but the GT there is a tiny screw then the rest of it is held on by plastic lugs which about 3 or 4 break as you pull on it. This is the only way to change the bulb as well.
-
^ Bulbs can be changed by a blank in the back of the plastic wheel arch on the GTIs
The merc DRL are made by hella.

Great find! I reckon they look the most OEM out of all of the posted versions. Really like how they are pert of the fog light surround.
-
Love to see the above fitted by someone on here . The grills ain't easy to get off . When I had my bumper painted and removed these grills t was pretty scary , didnt think I'd have many clips left on them by the time I'd done but they came off ok . Think you just have to say a prayer and pull like fucx

Sorry for my ignorance but is it just the LEDs you get for that price or do you get the grille pieces too?
If you don't get the grille pieces does anyone know if you can get these as a part and how much they wud cost from the dealers...oh and part number if anyone has it...??

Looking at the advert i'd say it's the complete set including grills.

I'd agree with Jimble, don't think that modded grill is a dealer option anyway?

Although they say manufacturer is VW, I've never seen that on any GTi I've seen. aftermarket not VW IMO

I might be going mad but I remember about a year ago that there is a VW retro fit LED DRL in the grill kit coming out soon?
Does anyone else remember the post?
Jim

Yes i remember the thread

I'm sure they were in the accessory brochure last time I looked, but I can't find them now. They were similar to the R ones and one hell of a lot of money.
The ones in the fog light grilles in this thread look bang on, but no good for a GT  The only thing that would worry me about any aftermarket ones tho', would be them being too blue, like the ones lots of people buy from Halfords.
Also how do they wire in? Do they replace the standard bulbs in the headlights and therefore turn off when the parking lights or headlights are turned off? Or do you turn the standard ones off and have these wired to the ignition, meaning you need an additional relay to turn them off?
-
Aftermarket DRL's just look tacky, buy an Audi if you need them

One look at his misspaced number plate says it all to me.
-
i think they look good , ha ha ha mis spaced plates . love the drl fog grills . wonder how he s wired hem
-
On the VW accessories for the mk6 Golf they are now doing DRL,s like the R ones, but you cant put them on the GTI due to the fog lights, shame they would have been the ones for me
-
you can get them for the SEAT leon too as a dealer retro fit. probably the same part
-
I know a number of people didn't like these, but I think they look OK.
-
who s is this above car i love um , are they canbus freindly or does your dash light up like a christmas tree when you turn them on
-
It's my car, they do not give any error lights, there are four wires so they can be wired in different configurations, obviously a switched live wire and an earth, the other two give different functions, one dims them when the headlights are switched on, the other turns them off completely when the lights are on.
They are really bright and good quality, even the dealer commented that he liked them when it went in for service.
-
i love them pal look as though there meant to be there . are they ebay ones and how have you wired them . were they big money

Sorry don't mean to sound like an arse but why have you fitted additional DRL's when you already have the oem ones?
-
bet it looks ace when there both on

Having looked closer the headlights are retro fit OEM look and are nice and I agree with Raffe why fit the others as well?
I too am not a fan of retro fit DRL's, reminds me of when the fitting of spot lights was popular a number of years a go
-
i understand what your saying but thats why i like these , they dont look like your average bolted on cheap drl s like you see flying round on corsa s lol .
-
hows best to wire up aftermarket drl s , were would you pick up your perminant feed ?????
-
The lights in the headlight are only sidelights, these are replicas, pretty good and I know there is a way to get them work as DRLs, but I just liked the others. Besides I want people to see me coming.

Question for you fellow MK6ers...
As some of you know I have Kenny's aftermarket LED xenons fitted to the GTD and Scott the top fella that he is has leant me his VCDS cable again to make a couple of tweeks to them...now I'm loving the drls but find they seem to shut off and go to dipped beam far to early, now I know it's obviously getting darker sooner but my drls seem to shut off around 2-3pm depending on light conditions ect ect...
Now the question is, Do you fellow 6ers who have the Xenons fitted have the same issue? reason I ask is that I see other drivers on the road with drls still lit i.e Audi's BM's ect...
Is there a way with vcds to programme them so they stay on a little longer?
@ Kenny, did you notice the same issue when you had these fitted mate?
Cheers
Steve

If you read this thread - http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?10123-Product-Review-–-Bold-Sport-Replica-Mk6-Golf-HID-Headlamps-*Updated* it shows that you need to link pins 4 and 10 togther to enable the lights as DRL.
I fitted similar lights but fitted auxillary DRLs beside the foglights.
-
To Mr GTD, there seems to be a lot in inconsistency when it comes to auto lights coming on. I sometimes wonder if heading north your headlights are more likely to come on, as opposed to facing south at the same time of day, due to the light sensor being at the front.
I was driving in bright, low evening sunshine back in the summer (last year ) with the sun behind me. My headlights came on. On the way back home minutes later, driving towards the sun, the lights had turned off. I did wonder if the rear mirror sensor and the front light sensor had worked out that the sun was behind me, so turned the lights on as is suggested in the Police driver training handbook. Surely it can't be that clever?
-
Hi Mustard,
Are you still running these DRLs on your MK 6?
I think they look great, very OEM, so was wondering if you were happy with them?
I look forward to hearing from you with your opinion...
Cheers,
Si.
-
Hi Si,
Yes I am still running them and an completely happy with them, they look very OEM and are very bright. They can be wired to switch off with the sidelights or just to dim, so completely legal. I have mine wired to dim.
Would recommend them to anyone, still on ebay for £90
Andy

Thanks for your reply Andy!
Do you have any other pictures you could post for me?
-
Hi Si,
I will take some over the weekend and send them on.

Cheers Andy...

Only managed to get one photo, taken in bright sunlight, will try for a close up another day.

Do you have a link to the exact ones you got off eBay? Fancy some of those myself

I think this is the same seller, but the lights are definitely the same, it was a while ago the I bought them and they were a bit cheaper then.

Could you post a pic with them not switched on? Would like to see what they look like when not lit
Thanks
Chris.

I've just had mine delivered - the firm were brilliant communicators and the parcel tracking was flawless.
As for the quality? They really are a quality item and you would be hard pressed to tell them from OEM!
I'm having them fitted on Monday along with my LED rears, so I'll post some pictures up afterwards...
-
Siburt, I've been looking at these too, let me know how easy it is to fit them and get some pics up
-
I've now had them installed and they are superb - very OEM looking and great value for money!
If I can suss out how to post some pics, I will...

What's the consensus??
-
How bright ate they compared to other cars standard DRLs? Are they as bright?
-
They're super bright and I'm very fussy!!
-
They look pretty good
Not sure I like the look of them in the switched off state tho.
May order some myself.
How they for fitting? straight forward?
-
To be honest, it's not the best shot in the world - they just look like any other marque's OEM units, on or off!
My mate actually fitted them and didn't have any trouble...
