Title: Aftermarket LED DRL's
Post by: MAW73 on 31 December 2010, 18:27
Anyone know if its possible to fit aftermarket LED DRL's on the golfs (i.e. a bit like the R's) ??

I've seen a picture somewhere on one of the German formums of a GTI with a curved LED DRL's fitted which looked really nice but I'm buggered if I can find it.

Not seen them but there easy to wire up if you can find some to fit.
I was waiting for a firm who do them for the mk5 GTI to produce some for the mk6.

I do agree something like the R's would be great.

What i was thinking was the top slat of the grill next to the fog light a smoked one similar to the golf R but its that space is only 14cm x 2.5cm

There are legal minimum heights for DRL that were on the hella website. LINK (http://www.daytime-running-light.com/UK/picture/downloads/anbau_vorschriften/J00154_TFL_Broschuere_GB.pdf)

EDIT
They look abit like the HELLA day time running light LEDay flex

I think that link is quite confusing the way they have set out where the lights are permitted.
Looking at the maximum hight the lights can it looks as if they must be below the headlights.
Yet the maximum height is 1500mm or do they mean it must be under the headlight up to a maximum height of 1500mm? If so then they must have different regs for lights actually in the headlights i.e. the Golf

I think these would work well, would need some work to get them to fit but much better than ebay special headlights IMHO.

These can be got for a pretty good price at Euro Car Parts too (plus 20% off this month with code JAN20), £91 delivered

On the Phillips website theres a 'Try before you buy option' where you can download a front picture of your car and paste the LEDs on......

So here's one I made earlier with Phillps Daylight 4's

Be good if you could fit them inside the fog light itself so the car gets some nice glowing fangs!
I'm not 100% sold on them but they've got to look better than the yellow DRLs on the non Xenon equipped cars (I turned my DRLs off as they look like dirty teeth).

Thats similar to what i was thinking but them a bit higher on that grill in the first slot.

Its the angle of these grills i was concerned with as it will but the lights at a angle.

I also fancied smoked DRLs which i have seen, that way when its parked it will look more oem rather than an extra  light unit fitted.

I noticed as I walked past a merc today that they have these boomerang shapped LED DRL's which are surface mounted over the honeycomb section. These look very nice imo. I wonder if the merc ones could be retrofited over the middle front honeycomb section on the GTI??

Don't know about the GTI / GTD but the GT there is a tiny screw then the rest of it is held on by plastic lugs which about 3 or 4 break as you pull on it. This is the only way to change the bulb as well.

^ Bulbs can be changed by a blank in the back of the plastic wheel arch on the GTIs

The merc DRL are made by hella.

Love to see the above fitted by someone on here . The grills ain't easy to get off . When I had my bumper painted and removed these grills t was pretty scary , didnt think I'd have many clips left on them by the time I'd done but they came off ok . Think you just have to say a prayer and pull like fucx

Jim

I'm sure they were in the accessory brochure last time I looked, but I can't find them now. They were similar to the R ones and one hell of a lot of money.

The ones in the fog light grilles in this thread look bang on, but no good for a GT  The only thing that would worry me about any aftermarket ones tho', would be them being too blue, like the ones lots of people buy from Halfords.

Also how do they wire in? Do they replace the standard bulbs in the headlights and therefore turn off when the parking lights or headlights are turned off? Or do you turn the standard ones off and have these wired to the ignition, meaning you need an additional relay to turn them off?

It's my car, they do not give any error lights, there are four wires so they can be wired in different configurations, obviously a switched live wire and an earth, the other two give different functions, one dims them when the headlights are switched on, the other turns them off completely when the lights are on.

They are really bright and good quality, even the dealer commented that he liked them when it went in for service.

Question for you fellow MK6ers...

As some of you know I have Kenny's aftermarket LED xenons fitted to the GTD and Scott the top fella that he is has leant me his VCDS cable again to make a couple of tweeks to them...now I'm loving the drls but find they seem to shut off and go to dipped beam far to early, now I know it's obviously getting darker sooner but my drls seem to shut off around 2-3pm depending on light conditions ect ect...

Now the question is, Do you fellow 6ers who have the Xenons fitted have the same issue? reason I ask is that I see other drivers on the road with drls still lit i.e Audi's BM's ect...

Is there a way with vcds to programme them so they stay on a little longer?

@ Kenny, did you notice the same issue when you had these fitted mate?

Cheers
Steve

If you read this thread - http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?10123-Product-Review-–-Bold-Sport-Replica-Mk6-Golf-HID-Headlamps-*Updated* it shows that you need to link pins 4 and 10 togther to enable the lights as DRL.
I fitted similar lights but fitted auxillary DRLs beside the foglights.

To Mr GTD, there seems to be a lot in inconsistency when it comes to auto lights coming on. I sometimes wonder if heading north your headlights are more likely to come on, as opposed to facing south at the same time of day, due to the light sensor being at the front.

I was driving in bright, low evening sunshine back in the summer (last year ) with the sun behind me. My headlights came on. On the way back home minutes later, driving towards the sun, the lights had turned off. I did wonder if the rear mirror sensor and the front light sensor had worked out that the sun was behind me, so turned the lights on as is suggested in the Police driver training handbook. Surely it can't be that clever?

Hi Si,

Yes I am still running them and an completely happy with them, they look very OEM and are very bright. They can be wired to switch off with the sidelights or just to dim, so completely legal. I have mine wired to dim.

Would recommend them to anyone, still on ebay for £90

To be honest, it's not the best shot in the world - they just look like any other marque's OEM units, on or off!

My mate actually fitted them and didn't have any trouble...
