Hey Folks
I bought a GTI from new earlier this year but I think they must have made a mistake with the badging as I think I got an oil burner.
Doing the sums, I'm going through 1.4 litres of oil per 2,000 miles. The car's mileage is just over 4,5k from new. I initially dismissed the oil consumption as running in but would have thought that it would have stabilised to more acceptable levels by now. It's thirstier than other cars I've had and wondered if I was unusual in my observations?
80% of my driving is in London so I can never really open her up, the other 20% I try and make up for it.
Be grateful for any comments from members whose cars have covered similar mileage and more...
Thanks
Alex

In the manual you'll find that it probably say something along the lines of 1 litre per 1000km is within acceptable tolerances.
The fact you do mostly inner city driving is not helping the oil consumption
-
I, like AGB, drive only in Central London. We are practically neighbours!
However, mine has not used one drop (exaggeration) of oil in the 3380 miles I have covered. But remember part of my journey is on the A40 Westway.
Engines do vary.

Thanks guys.
Yeah, I had already checked the manual and the car is within tolerances but I was wondering what other people were getting. Lots of variables at play of course and I was trying to figure out how much the city driving was impacting consumption.
If anyone is doing a group buy on oil, count me in!

I'm a bad person. I never even checked my oil. Never had any issues that I knew about, first service at 12,500 miles.
Rolfe.

I check mine once a month or so, no oil used at all at least not noticable on the dipstick level. Been like that since new. (Sept 09)
Always checked with the engine cold and parked on a level.
Same on the mk 5.
Edit.And the mk 4.
Don't remember the mk1 using much but then I probably didn't bother checking all those years ago...

Think i have only topped up once in 15,000 mile used hardly any, amazing how the same engines can vary so much

I'm with Morag, it's rare my bonnet gets opened, even rarer for my dipstick to come out of it's tube..... :embarassed:
I've had dozens of VAG cars that haven't had a drink problem so just assume they will all be like that - could be a costly mistake one day!

90% of my driving is stop start, city driving (if can call it that) and used about 250mls in 12,500 miles. There was a small oil leak near the turbo. In the 6,000 miles since the leak was repaired the car hasn't used any oil.
-
Mine does not seem to use any oil or very little, mind you i do not do alot of miles its 18 months old been serviced once and only done 6400 miles.

Cannot say I have noticed any oil use in 18K, but as it is stated earlier, all cars differ. At least you knowand can keep an eye on it.

My Mk5 drinks oil.
Please check.

I've done just on 4K in mine since July.
I check the oil pretty much every couple of weeks and the dipstick level was always the same.
I spent the time between Xmas & New Year on a trip to the lakes and noticed when I checked the level when I came back to it had dropped about half a centimetre on the dipstick.
That trip certainly required some fluids to pet put in/on the car. Along with the oil, I needed a couple of litres of screenwash as well as several times two-bucket-method refills of water to get the thing clean.
Apart from it's dislike of Kirkstone Pass in the snow, the car performed superb as always during its little holiday.

I've done 10K in the past year. I'm ashamed to say I've only recently checked the oil level and it was just approaching the minimum line. I've topped her up with 500ml of Castrol SLX longlife III oil and everything is running tickety boo!

I've spoken to the dealership service manager, he is going to give my car a check up so I'll post back in case his findings help someone else.
Halfords are doing a very good deal on oil BTW...

hi, i got my gti last month, it was serviced mid 08/10,at 9000 miles its just reached 11500 and i`ve just checked it for the 1st time since buying it, it just on the minimum now so i`m guessing its used .5-1lt,in that period.is it ok to use any 5w 30 oil or is it supposed to be vw stuff? also the oil seems abit dirty for a couple of thousend miles is this the norm[its only ever done short runs no motorway driving]?cheers mark

I bought a litre of the VW stuff when I picked mine up in July 09 to keep in the boot if I ever needed to top up. The can hasn't moved from the boot since - not a drop. It was obviously serviced in July 2010.
Funny really cos I've read a lot over the years about VWs using oil but I can't recall ever having to top up any of the Mk3/4/6s I've had (or the Mk2 for that matter).

Alex can I just check with you that once you took delivery of your new baby, that you topped up ALL fluid levels....? I found out on here, that VW ship their cars over with minimal fluid levels to assist their carbon footprint etc. Therefore, for eg, my new baby had these minimal fluid levels (oil, gas, water, everything) and the dealer did not top these up before presenting me with the car!
Thanks to the peeps here, I was made aware of this very early and therefore topped up the essential fluids where possible and have complained to my dealer. Could this be why your oil levels are low...?....which doesn't mean that your baby burns oil (you would see blue smoke from your exhaust anyway)...?

Yesterday I have the "check oil level" warning when I started up my car. Now I haven't checked the oil once since having the car new in Sept, but i've only covered 2400 miles. Having just read through the manual it says that engine an use more oil during the first 3000 miles. I'm going to pop it in to the dealer who are usually pretty good about top ups for this sort of thing. My old Mk5 GT used to pratically drink the stuff.
