Title: Screeching noise from steering - help needed
Post by: barleymagrew on 17 February 2005, 17:49
I have a Mk2 Golf GTI with power steering. When I turn the steering wheel from side to side, the car makes an almighty screeching noise - much like a slipping fanbelt.

I've checked the belt running the power steering pump and it seems tight enough.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Change the belt, its cheap enough to do, at  least then uv eliminated it as the problem. If the noise continues, it must be the pump

Get someone to watch the pump pulley when you are turning the steering, do this with the car running.
You will soon see if the pump is knackered.

What will it be doing if the pumps knackered?

It will be the belt. I had the same problem.
