Title: Top mounts............
Post by: snifferdog on 30 December 2010, 16:22
Starting to do my head in - I wanted to get the shocks and springs on this week.

I bought a set of shocks and springs (second hand) and cant get the top mounts off!

There is a small circle around the top nut -

I couldnt get any of my spanners in there, a socket went on fine but obviously you need to have an allen key in the top so thats no good. I therefore purchased a deep offset spanner from ebay -

Unfortunately this is too fat for the surround hole and wont go onto the nut!  :undecided: What the bloody hell am I supposed to use? You lot have all lowered your cars, I thought it was meant to be easy?!  -

You could try a set of needle nosed pliers to hold the nut

Your easiest solution would be to compress the spring and then go to your nearest tyre bay with a spark plug socket and a big smile and get then to change the two top mounts for you with an air gun. I used a 12v impact socket with no trouble. Told you you should have come to mine Mate as I am bored stiff as well

There should be allen key cut out on the end of shock shaft, or flats.
I learnt from past experience to crack it off with the weight of the car still on it.

Yes Mate I am off work till Tuesday....if you want to come over I can give you a hand but you are almost done anyway. I would take the two front shocks to the nearest tyre bay and give them a drink to remove the two mount nuts and then pop on your new spring and top mounts while you're there and get them to tighten them back up. Remove the spring compressors then go home and refit them and job done. However, if you want a hand then feel free to PM me.

Get a spark plug socket that has a hex on the top to get a spanner on.

Then get an allen key that goes into a socket like this.

Then put your socket on get a spanner round the top of it.Then put your allen key socket through the top of the socket and start spanner wanking.

Works everytime.

Windy gun is the best method, go and make friends with a mechanic.

The top mounts ended up being the easiest part! The 2 bolts at the bottom were an absolute nightmare! I even used my uncles impact gun thingy and it didnt touch em, I broke several ratchets and sockets too! Ive just got back from my uncles house after a 7 hour day. The car is now lowered 40mm on 3 corners. Really cant be arsed to go back and do the 4th but Ive got to now.

Ohhh it feels loads better, just been out for a little drive and the steering feels more nimble and there are no bangs from the old knackered shockers. Gonna do the final corner tomorrow morning (if I dont get wasted tonight ). Doesnt look much lower though to be fair, its quite subtle. Last time I lowered a car it was about 100mm with springs only on standard shocks, that was horrible!

Just let it settle down for a bit before you adjust it anymore as it will get lower as it settle's.
I replaced my top mounts for vr6 ones today as it happens while i swapped the brakes to shiny new bigger affairs!
239mm solid-280mm Vented ftmfw!

Happy new year.

Mines shocks and springs so there wont be any adjusting

Are the bigger brakes much better than the standard affairs?

Aww right  well at least it will look better once it has settled down.

Brakes wise I tell you what compared to the originals they are bloody amazing.Mk3 Golf brakes arnt the best compared to other stuff but ive just put
MK2 16V hubs(to keep 4x100pcd)
G60 Calipers and resealed them
Brembo max discs
Ebc Green stuff pads

and it stops amazingly well and they are not even bedded in yet.

Mine has drilled and vented discs on the front and standard discs on the rears. When the pads need changing in a month or two I am going to change the rear discs for drilled and vented and put the greenstuff pads all round. However the difference between the vr and the 8v in braking is quite a lot. Understandably it has to be better but you can really feel the difference so if you're thinking of changing the brakes find a vr breaking and get the bits from there.
