Title: What gearbox version do I have?
Post by: shiftlocked on 30 December 2010, 13:41
This is more life confessions of a golf driver.

For a few years now my reverse has been, shall we say, not really wanting to let me reverse.  It pops outs and makes a rattling , grinding noise when its put in reverse.  Try to reverse with a slight incline up a hill.... forget it.

Time for a new gearbox and clutch.  I was told that there are about 5 different versions of box for this so could anyone help me to find out what version I have so I can start looking about.

Thanks

If it just says GTI on the back in chrome and on the grill at the front then it's an 8v. The 16v has a 16v badge instead of the GTI badge.

And if you look at the engine it will say DOHC 16V on the inlet for a 16v obvously. And the 8valve will be smaller on the rocker cover only having one cam

Or pop the bonnet and have a look at the engine!

If it looks something like this it is 8v, otherwise it will be 16v:

Cool, I never knew that if it wasn't signposted it was an 8v anyways.  I'm sure i've seen some cars that have the 8v badge on them.

So now we know the car, how do I find out what gearbox I need?  The garage down the road said something about a sticker in the boot?

you need an 020 type from a 2.0 (there are a few 3 digit codes that don't really mean alot! and wont affect fitment)
just dont get a diesel or 1.8 box as the ratios will be out

Thanks guys for being helpfull and patient getting this sorted for me.

Whats your take on getting a box from Ebay or is it better to ask in the classifieds on here?

Im also assuming that 020 is a different code than AAZ, CHD etc?

AAZ, CHD is the gearbox type....although they are all 020 type boxes with no significant differences

I will say always replace the clutch (using the gearbox code to get the right one) and buying a used box is pure luck unless you can see/hear or better try it running! (ebay or breakers here are the same)

Have you replaced all of the gear linkages?

its more the noise thing that does my head in to be honest as it echos back of things and spoils the driving experience, when the clutch is depressed, no noise but when not depressed there's a constant squeek from the box.

cos of the selecting problem i might as well just do the whole box and clutch as i use the clutch more than i should to stop the noise when stopped at lights etc
