Hey All,
Ive just got myself an E plate 1.8 16v for 1k, a short test drive and I had to have it.
My question is, I am looking to lower it - any advice for the best lowering kit? I don't want to break the bank either.
Also any suggestions on a nice steering wheel would be appreciated.
PS this is a great site - nice one.

you and your wooden wheel?!!
for decent shocks and springs euro car parts do a set of bilstein shocks with shorter pistons, and a set of springs for not alot of cash. gibby was raving about his so have a look back through the old threads and see what you can find.

i have just purchased bilstein streetline kit which lowers about 40mm, with the springs from awesome gti for a couple of quid under ?200. It is being fitted as i write this and i hope to be testing it on my wat to dubfreeze this sunday. i will let you know if its any good. i am also replacing wishbones and all the rubber bits on the anti-roll bars etc. plus wheel bearings brakes, the whole lot
car should be like new

Bilstein seems to be the way to go then. Had a look on the Awesome Gti and euro car parts sites - The streetline kit looks good, think I'll probably go for that as long as you are happy with it kegs.
Blue - Cheers for the offer but im looking to replace the shox aswell. Steering wheels from dubmeister look good.

i had a set of those bilsteins and they did me fine for a few years before i sold them on and bought coilovers. as far as i know they are still going strong.....which is why i recommended them!

Aye cheers joe, just put the streetline kit on my mk1 cab, Ventura springs and Bilstien gas shocks from ECP for ?135 and they've been sound so far for the money plus labour costs on top of that though of ?80. Can't go wrong for that price, but if you want to spend more there are other kits out there.

Koni shocks and eibach springs seem to be another very highly rated combination, not sure of the cost though.
One question I have been pondering over though while considering lowering my car a bit is about the load regulating valve for the rear brakes. The valve applies more braking to the rear of the car when you are carrying a heavy load and thus the suspension is compressed. Surely lowering the car has the same affect and would mess up the brake biasing under normal conditions??? Is this something that should really be adjusted when lowering a car???
-
Good point tobz, Im MOTing mine tomorrow and having a good look underneath first, i'll see if theres any adjustment possible (unless someone else knows )
The BBS wheels look v. nice btw. I might have to get some meself

they are a tried and tested combination but cost alot more, i've got a loooow car and have never had any problems with the brake system. i know what you mean but in reality it doesn't seem to make any difference!

Agreed - had a look and there is a small amount of adjustment to take any excess play out of the spring which operates the valve when under load, although mine was seized (still didn't work properly after freeing off, new one on order) but went through the brake test on the MOT with no worries.
Passed MOT no worries. I was surprised as the car has just been sitting on a drive for a year and a half. Had to take out the door handles and lube the mechanisms and clean off a load of moss but already its looking good.

Hi its kegs, got my car back, its like a new car, the bilstein suspension with ventura springs sits about 50mm lower than previous and it is excellent. I also had all the wheel bearings and front wishbones, and front and rear disk brake and pads replaced, so it drives like a new car. the ride is a little more harsh without doubt, but not so your teeth are rattling, but without doubt the handling is so much tighter and firmer, and you can hold far more speed through a corner, i did this a lot last night as the snow was starting to fall, and i could keep corner speed far higher than before. My next step is 15 inch wheels that are currently being refurbed and i will fit them with decent skins for a change... my advice go and get it lowered, the guy who did the work for me said the bilstein shocks were simple in design and fitted no problem. The only parts i had to replace that i didnt expect to were the top spring cups on the rear suspension, they were absolutely knackered, other than that he re-bulit the mechnicals in about 8 hours (top boy)

Nice one, I'll defo go for the Bilsteins + Venturas then. Ive been advised about the fronts having top bearings that are maybe worth changing whilst replacing the struts, but i'll be looking into that more at the weekend (Full Service + cambelt with tensioner planned as well) Were the rear cups expensive? If not i'll do them aswell. Any pics of your golf posted anywhere?
Final question - where did you buy your bits from?
-
managed to get the rear cups at dubfreeze for ?5 for a pair of second hand. I bought the suspension and springs from Awesome gti near warrington (?197)
I will take some pics this weekend and post them monday
good luck
