Title: Retro-fit Dynaudio
Post by: branchespark on 29 December 2010, 19:44
There were some threads 18 months ago on this, but does anyone know if retro-fitting Dynaudio in to a mk6 can be done or if there is a better solution?

Cheers

Have you or are you ordering a car with Dynaudio?

If you have fine, if you have not, just get yourself a sub-woofer for £250 to work with the RNS510/RCD510. You'll need one anyway with the Dynaudio as it also lacks good bass extension.

I'll hunt out the thread for you.

I'd also like to do this and add a sub of some sort as the standard speakers leave a lot to be desired, the rear speakers being particularly bad.

As per other threads, looking at getting a nearly new GTD which does not come with Dynaudio. It may be that it is not up to much, but I did not see how good the stock speakers were. That's for tomorrow's visit to the showroom!

I'd also like to do this and add a sub of some sort as the standard speakers leave a lot to be desired, the rear speakers being particularly bad.

Doc: Once you install the sub, you turn the bass down on the RNS/RCD to two or three notches above minimum (depending on your taste), adjust the bass gain and cut-off freq on the sub. a The mid/bass speakers then mainly produce upper bass and mid range, distortion levels are reduced significantly and the overall effect is quite beguiling.

I have also found that the mid and treble levels have to be reduced by 3 notches from the centre value.

The weak link then becomes the treble unit which can at times sound a bit scratchy. I have the treble level one notch below the mid. This IMO gives the best overall balance to my ears.

The one good feature of the Dynaudio is that it has a very clean sounding treble driver. The mid-bass driver is no better than the standard one. I personally prefer the speed of the standard paper cone mid-bass driver to the plastic Dynaudio one which I feel is a bit ineffecient. Hence the need for the Dynaudio slave amp.

Just been there and seen that thread.

No, I was suggesting you would be the best to consultant on high quality in-car audio systems, period. I did not consider Dynaudio when I wrote that.

We are reading from different pages.
The previous statement of mine, which I amended as the syntax was too complicated, also did not consider Dynaudio.

Anyway, I am going to install a more powerful amplifier under the driver's seat in the New Year and then judge the overall sound of the standard speakers again. One step at a time, saves nine!

Not much room under the drivers side sadly. An Alpine PDX or JL HD fits nice under the passenger seat but thats were your sub is.

Great stuff Snoops but a bit OTT for this old man.
I'll leave that to the young Turks to damage their hearing. It's good for business.
