I do all the bloody time. People making stupid comments, like why don't you get a newer car? and Oh my god is that 'thing' still going
Most people simply just don't get it do they!
Even my Dad, brother and Girlfriend moan about it
I love my MK1 and love using it as a dailey driver
I'm sure some of you get the same treatment?
-
Lads at work take the p1ss and I get the usually hairdresser b0llocks, but generally speaking people do appreciate the car and when it's cleaned and polished up it looks fekkin great !? ?
I know that every time I get in mine I love driving it and it brings a smile to my face, I guess some people get it Bronze and some people don't.?
-
Smart arsed remarks like - "boy racer", "cruiser", or "when you getting neons" really wind me up. Just shows peoples ignorance I s'pose. The last thing I want to do with my cab is make it look like the mother ship from ET, with flashing lights and neons, and the corraado looks just like it did when it left the factory!!
-
the corraado looks just like it did when it left the factory!!
Aye but only when the bonnets down
-
I think you should tell them it is a Classic and to p!ss off!!!!
Your car will be worth money stilll when all these modern cars are gone
-
yeah down here in australia, get it all the time. they get a shock though when the little golf keeps up with them on take off and passes them thru the bends haha
-
Not one person has ever slated my car....not that they wud dare
As for the boy racers..they r probably impressed cos im a girlie n dont drive sumthin stoopid like a corsa or,even worse,a new mini
Mines only ever been complemented!
Dinx
-
i get the odd hairdressers quote but at the end of the day when the sun is out...hows car do they want to be in hehe
plus if they need to get anywhere fast...who do they call....no not ghostbusters LOL
esp if you go scooby chasing, then they know the score
-
My favourite one is why do you spend so much money on it when you can get a new car! i just laugh and say what car are you driven? yeah right a Ford or a citreon people just dont know!
-
Sounds like most of us get stupid remarks made about our cars then?
I get the 'how much have you spent on it? It's only a G reg' all the time too?
Nearly fell off my chair lauging at AdamB's comment 'mothership'?? ???? You've got a stunning cab you done very tasteful mods
-
not had any bad comments apart from people referring to the clipper bumpers as a body kit. and occasional comments about the cc bit.
best one was when i bought it and some alky tramp said it was a really nice car and how much did i want for it??
-
i laugh at people lookign at rallyes and commenting on the 'add on' body kit lol
-
i laugh at people lookign at rallyes and commenting on the 'add on' body kit lol
not as insulting as "why have you put jetta headlights on it ?"
-

This used to really get to me when we had the Rallye, Gary would knock it and say NO LOOK IT IS METAL and real not a bloody bodykit!!!!

-
end of the day its your motor your not out for a public opinion, you drive it for your own pleasure, balls to what anyone else thinks.
-
like velly,i get the hairdresser quip!!but there's one thing that winds me up,why have you put those stickers on the side!!!.then you end up explaining the whole history of the sportline ltd edition and peps just havent got a f**king clue what your on about.

i think alot of people are very surprised when i keep up with them, especialy around the twistie bits, ive never had anyone diss it only my little brother when i first brought it "why have you baught a bangor" he know wants to buy it off me haha.
people stare at uni too when i pull up in it poping and banging lol
-
I think the problem lies with the type of people that make these comments. They use a car to get from A to B.
WHERES THE FUN IN THAT!
My cars for driving not getting from a to b! Sometimes i just drive cos i want to.
-
*remembers last summer...all hot n perfect cabrio-roof down weather....full tank o petrol not lasting a day..ahh happy days!!*

Went for a meal with my girlfriends parents today, topic of the the conversation landed on my mk1 and the work that has to be done to it. My girlfriends dad said "Why don;t you sell it and get something newer with less work to be done?" I tried not to laugh loudly in his face, i honestly did try.
If only he knew how f**kin cool mk1s are. Oh and he drives a Rover 25.
-
say's it all he drives a rover 25 :embarassed: People honestly dont know do they? Vdubs are cool neway but retro Vdubs just get better with age

Im with ya on that one, i used to come home cross country from college just so i could have some fun and take my mind off every thing.
Its the best thing to do when your felling sh!t, get in the car, find those wonderful b-roads, and put the boot in, your toubles will just fly past!
Just watch out for b!tch slow, tractors, the easiest way to test your emergancey stops!

I have to be honest I get some stick off mi mates all the time (but if they knew anything about anything they'd be dangerous!!!!) stuff like, "why do you spend your money on that when you could have a new one?" ........ simple really mate, they the grand daddy of all hot hatches n don't look like your driving some bubble wrap with wheels. I had to cringe when I went to the barbers to get the wig trimmed with my mate, we pulled up in the cab outside (nice sunny day, car looking phat!!!) when i got in the chair (mate in the chair at the side of me) the barber turned round to me and said "f***ing nice car mate, i've always wanted one of those" my mate nearly fell off his seat. needless to say the hairdresser comments haven't stopped!!!
Still nothing looks like them and they have that retro cool look, and lets face it, they DO turn heads in the summer!!!!... suppose it's what ever lights your candle........ am toying with the idea of an Elise next (wouldn't mind something with a little more poke), or maybe in addition too
sportline_velly> scooby chasing?? Good god you must have modded ya motor as mine just cowers at lights when there's a scooby there, there's no point even trying in mine!!!! I just reassure myself by saying that they aint built for speed... your sportline gives them a go does it??? if so NICE WORK!!!!!
Cheers guys

Same story here!
If I had a quid every time some friend or relative has said Why don't you get a new car? or 'Why do you keep throwing money at it? I would be very rich.
Firstly, I can't think of a new car that compares or looks as good and I spend money on it because it's a classic and I love it to bits. As it's already been pointed out, it will be around for years after the Saxo's of this world have disappeared.
For a car that's got its roots in a 30 year old design I still think it stands head and shoulders above the majority of today's bland offerings.
On a summers day, it's priceless.

Funny enough I've been getting the p1ss taken out of mine today, saying I'm a freak and into max power. Tried to explain, but they just didn't want to listen
-
Max Power! thats just stupid! some people have no clue! At the end of the day its your choice and worth it if it makes you happy! And of course the Vw show scene preety awesome so bring on the shows and hopefully some good wheather!
-

Your right cheers mate. No matter how much you tell them it's nothing like Max Power they just say it even more.
she saw the pics and took the p1ss and then said 'what's it all about'. I e-mailed her and explained the whole VW scene and she said that she didn't want my life story and said I'm still a max power person  I e-mailed her back saying you are the one that asked the question, was just explaining it to you, end of story, laters clart
-
Pah girls who needs em!
They just dont understand. My wife turned her nose up at my new shiney design 90 wheels because they had a porsche badge in the middle! She said it was silly. You just cant win mate. Try talking handbags and shoes with them and y might have more luck.
-
With the women they don't understand that the older you get, the more expensive the toys get!!!
-
erm..boys..as u slag women..take a look at my car..then..suck on ya exhaust as u swallow ur words!!
dont even go there!!!
-
There always a few exceptions to the rules
-

If she thinks that yours is max power Bronze then she doesn't really know what max power is all about  in which case it's not an opinion to be concerned about.
-
If she knew anything about anythin she`d know that the whole VW thing is about as far from max power as chalk is from cheese,
And as for using your car for "getting from a-b" well its these kinda people who are killing the british car industy, everyone uses a car its a tool take kids school go to work , do the shoppin ,not so long ago owning a car was a privalidge that was to be enjoyed , thats why petrolheads like uslot are seen as the enemy, they try taxing us off the roads, slowing us down everywhere you go because motorists are evil and people who love there cars are the most evil of em all , GGRRRRRR  dam my bloods boiling
on the upside i love(ed) just goin out for a blast help you foget ever single thing thats on your mind,
and just remember , a-b sometimes is via c-d-e-f and g
-
I keep thinking of selling my vw to get something a bit better but i cant seem to find any 4 seated cab that even comes close to my vw.
Every time i take to the roads everybody looks. This surley means one thing KEEP IT!!!.
Oh Sh*t its snowing again looks like i will be in the garge all day.
-
The sad thing is its 7.00am on a sunday morning and i am talking ang thinking about my vw.
Am i really that sad  :embarassed:

No you are just like the rest of us  if im not doing uni work  then im thinking about what im planning for my car for the summer and when im going to do it
-
Didn't know whether to take it as a compliment at 1st...... I'd just bought my MkI and was parking up and a couple of about 65+ stopped and starting talking to me saying what a lovely car it was. Pretty damn surreal, the oldies normally complain about the noise?
-
stu, what killed the british car industry was strikes and building unreliable, low specced, out dated heaps of sh!t simple as that.
you go dinx ?
some nice generalisation there boys, and probably the reason for so few female mechanics. i know loads of men who know sod all about cars but it never gets mentioned. women in engineering need to work 3 times as hard to get 1/2 the recognition no wonder why they leave. comments like are you shure you know what your doing love and crap was the reason i decided to throw it in.
-
surely that means you let them win carrie
-
yeah i know but it just got tireing, the constant having to prove yourself all the time.
-
i left school at 16 n went to be an apprentise , i know its not the same but you still gotta prove your worth before the blokes will listen and or pay attention , goin streight from high school , to bein on a par with somethin a mechanic thinks he`s trod in is hard work , lots more should do it cause it sorts you out , tho out of a class of 45 when we started after 3 years there was 20 left , some just cant take it , spose its what your made of , i wouldnt change it for the world got some amazin memerys and me some fantastic people , plus im at uni now , doing it all again , this time hopefully there will be less being set on fire , taunted , tied up , put in boxes , sent out in the rain , or ritual stripping
-
I'm very lucky as i get to work from home most of the time.
I get stressed by deadlines, difficult e-mails to people i don't like, writting presentations for things i don't care about.
All i find i want to do is spot the change in the weather, drop the roof and blow my wig away!!
then all is well in the world
I don't think people get what a raw driving experience you get from a MK1.
It all come from the car you learned to drive in all those years ago. 60% of the time it would have been a fiesta. 99% of those just would like a bigger more appointed / powerful fiesta SOULLESS
Keep running from the Fiesta people!!!!!!
-
I'm waiting for comments on my cab - as hardly anyone has seen it - including my friends and family... so I look forward to the comments once it's finished...
E.g.
So what work did you do on the car then?
I can't see the difference from a standard golf cab..!!
Why don't you buy a new cab?
How much did you spend?
Who cares really - once the suns out - then the cabs rule on the road...
-
the number of times i hear 'why dont you sell your golfs and get a decent car'.
then they moan about how their brand new cars are having to go in for work cos the electrics/gearbox etc is playing up and it makes my day
-
I get the p*ss ripped out of me all the time in my office by everyone and when i get home my missus starts with the 'that bloody red car!!'...I say 'Yes it is red!!'
Up to now I have entered it in a few show n shines and have to date taken,
1. Top Ten place at VWoodstock 04
2. First place at Mk1 meet at gaydon for the best standard Cabby
3. First place at Dub Freeze 05 for best standard Cabby
Each time I win a trophy I take it into work just to get my own back!! When one of the lads starts I have gone back at him with 'how many trophys has your woodwork bench won then??' that usually does the trick!!
No pics (how do you up load??) but see this months Golf+ for the Dub Freeze report, apparently the car is in there I haven't seen it yet!!
Cheers Dano
-
you got any pics???

Hi Dano, I saw your cab at Dubfreeze and it was very nice indeed mate! Glad that you took 1st place
Are you going to many other shows this year?
You girlfriend gives you sh1t just like mine then
-
Bronze,
I have a baby due in 7 weeks !
I think the question should be, "Will you be going to any more shows?" (Full stop!!)
May is out, can't stray too far, June will be changing nappies so maybe BVF at the beginning of July if I am a very very good boy!!! The Mk1 meet is on the 28/8/05, Bank Holiday weekend so I may be able to get that one in but as its my father-in-laws birthday it might be akward as well. :undecided:
As a bit of mutual appreciation, your cabby looks v.good as well. I had a good nosey round it, mainly looking for brown interiors (see my other posts on ashtray surrounds!). I noted your disapproval of the big ramp too!!
In Golf+ I have managed to queeze in on page16. My mate told me that I was in and got all excited, only to see the size of photo! Nice words though. How did mine beat Roger Worton's G60 though?
As for 'Mrs P's' comments, she has the Mk3 16v to drive and thats just had £300 spent on it for the MOT and thats before the service & cambelt change!! Now watch her go all quite about money!!!!
Thanks, Dano
-
Yeah, I saw the pic and the write up in the Golf +
I will be at BVF this year too, so we'll have to meet up for a pint and talk cabbies  Good luck with the baby mate
My interior isn't the best though, I can never get the seats to come up that clean. I really want cream leather, that would be nice
What's the mileage on yours? It looked like you had driven it straight from the factory to Dubfreeze  I've put mine in show and shine a few times, but will just be putting it in the club displays from now on as it's not really up to show and shine standard.
-
The mileage isn't 100% correct, currently showing 134,000. When I got the car I thought that the needle on the speedo was sticking so I swapped it for a 'newer' one losing about 17,000 miles in the process. I really wish that I hadn't now 'cause it lets the 'genuine' article down a bit.
The outside comes up nice and clean but the engine bay needs work doing to it. I didn't get it sprayed at the same time because it would have been too big-a-job :undecided:, plus the metal cambelt cover and fan mounting are a bit rusty and need to be either repainted or renewed :undecided:
I have just completed a 420 mile round trip from Preston, Lancs to Hitchin, Herts over yesterday & today in the car and it didn't let me down  On the way down I got 39.7mpg and on the way back 34.4. I must say that there was much wind around today so that could have influenced the readings. And it seemed much noiseier with a headacheon the return journey!!
VWNW will also be another venue that I'll be going to, so if I don't make BVF I'll be at Tatton for sure!!
See you there for a chat!!
Dano
