hi guys
been away a while...
looking to change my gf suspension as the car has done 110k and is starting to creak and be very soft and bouncy.
i,m changing the wheels as she has super low profiles on and the tyres are crap.
is it best to take it nto a garage and just get oem replaced or is there better/cheaper ways of doing this.
i,m a numpty when it comes to doing anything so it has to be proff done.
or is this a void question untill someone mechanical takes a look at it.
stupid question of the day award gors to me!!!
nice person of the day award goes to anyone who helps me out withyout setting fire to me by flaming lol

depends on a few things.
are you wanting uprated suspension or just standard?
are you wanting coilovers or just springs/shocks?
are you wanting the car lowerd?
have the shocks been changed as sounds like they may need to be changed aswell.
as for the "is it best to take it nto a garage" compleatly depends, its not the hardest of tasks to do, but depends on mechanicle ability.
(sory if youve answered the any of the above just i cant actually tell what your asking in that post? )

the problem is if your not very mechanicaly talented then your only option is to pay a garage which can then become costly. best thing is to get a good mate who knows what they are doing.
there are plenty of how to guides one here and on uk-mkivs.net on how to change the bushes. polyurethane bushes are the easiest option. actual shock and spring change is pretty sraight forward if you know what you are doing. have a good search on both sites mate. its been covered loads of times.

to me , getting out of the mk5 it just seems soggy and bouncy and crashy. it might be the wheels,as i say nackered and v low profile so once thats sorted it might improve-i,m just reasearching up as to what i might be looking at. and as anyone who knows me........ dont let me near anything mechanical lol.
thanks for the input-ill be off to a mates mate very soon.

saved on my ebay. thanks mate.
ill sort bushes out.
do you think ill need mounts etc??
happy new yr brother. you have been a great help

yes, its certainly worth changing top mounts and bearings while you got it all apart!.
try www.vwspares.co.uk for mounts and bushes.
audi TT for the front wishbone rear bushes and skoda fabia vrs rear axle bushes are what you want.. a much firmer bush but not as harsh as polyurethane bushes!.

get some polybushes - powerflex :) i loved the firmer ride on mine when i fitted them! Plus you will never have to change them again. I also noticed when i went back to standard 15" wheels from my 18" wheels, that with the huge tyre walls on the 15" the car was all over the shop, now i know why the handling was moaned about alot, when i was on 18"s i wondered what the fuss was about, and then i realised

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but i just need to clarify a few things......
1. I live in a part of the country where coilovers are no longer a viable option for me and therefore will be getting rid for Bilstein B4's.
2. Now what springs are best to use with them because all i want is a better ride. Don't care about lowering one bit. Done that got the t shirt now i want comfort back! There are two main roads i can use to go to work but due to the sh!t weather this country always has one of those roads keeps closing due to flooding, so i'm left with sit in an hours worth or traffic or take the back roads, which as you might guess are just that, back roads that have more bumps than i don't know what.
3. I HATE traffic with a vengeance! So i'm left with raise the car back to standard (1.8T GTi) height and replace my coilovers with shocks and springs. Also thinking bout reaplcing all bushes while the suspension is off.
Any thoughts and opinions would be welcomed.
Cheers
