Hello
Right, ive just picked up a very nice 91 1.3 ryder, on coilovers to sit next to my 85 GTI.
It WILL be having an engine conversion sometime very soon, but I need to know what to get/ best options.
I've already got a mk3 2.0 bottom end lined up, and love the way my k-jet 8v drives, but I really dont want to but another one just to rip the loom out, etc etc.
Soo ive already got a elec fuel pump and regulator fitted to the car, which brought me onto the thought about bike carbs (yes i have read the other post) but boss bogg (or whatever theyre called) dont make a manifold for the 8v.
Can i fit a crossflow 8v to a mk3 bottom end, and which head would this be ?
Does the 2.0 bottom end bolt to my subframe ?
If i where to mate the 2.0 bottom end to a mk2 gti gearbox (02A?) then would my standaard gear rod arrangments work? and would the driveshafts fit up ??
Anybody any experience with 1.3 conversions (and yes I have searched)
Thankie !

Wouldn't bother with any of that for the expense, slap an abf in it-preferably get yourself a mk3 16v donor car and you'll have every part you need. Jus need to read rubjonnys info on wiring it up, not the hardest to do as you've got the same fusebox as the mk3. Or buy a mk2 16v donor and swap everything. If your dead set on 8v one of the 8v peasants will have to help you
-
can knock you out a manifold if you want.
but personaly id just ABF it
-
If your going to do it, fit a ABF and make it worth the work.
-
i like the whole less work more power thing
-
Sounds too much of a bodge.
Just whack an ABF in there.
-
But that would mean me buying a nother gti mk2/3 then muching about with all the wiring ?
-
lifes never simple mate lol
-
You'd probably need to muck about with the wiring to get a bike-carb set up running right anyway.
Just do the right thing - put a rotten Golf3 out of its misery.
-
Why are people put of by wireing up an ABF it's plug and play.
-
It's wires - you know why - they are worried about releasing the huge quantity of dense smoke packed into the wires.
-
By no means afraid of wiring the car, but really plug and play ?? mk2 1.3 carb to a mk3 2.0 inj ??
Think im just going to look for a sh!tty mk3 2.0 8v or something, as i need to convert rear beam to disc aswell, fuell tank with inj pump, and all that jazz, too much to buy seperatly.
The mk3 cable change box ?
Can I convert mine to cable change ?
Or i could just turbo the 1.3 ? low boost, R5 carb, bit of head work, jobs a good un

Pretty much, just need the wiper wires from the mk2 as the mk3 ones are too short. Simplified further if you use an 020 'box to retain rod change :)
-
sorry guys i have a mk3 2.0 16v here is there a list that says exactly what i need from the car for the conversion as i dont want to forget nothing.. as i just wanna get conversion stuff out and then break the car.
-
I'd hang onto the whole car until you've finished the conversion mate, I was lifting bits off my donor right to the end
-
Thats the problem i cant buddy.. the old dear already isnt happy i have a mk4 and a mk2.. so will only have the mk3 for a couple of weeks before i get killed..
I think i will just strip what i can and then if i need little bits and bobs a long the line i will just buy them..
Just wanted to know roughly what i needed.. like the big bits ??
engine - obviously
gearbox - abf one or the standard 8v one ?
engine loom
drive shafts off abf ??
hubs off abf ??
ecu ??
fuse box ??
pedal box ??
gear linkages ??
See what i mean lol I read a thread on club gti on 2.0 16v conversion and it didnt really say what i needed.. I know its plug and play but i dont know what i need to plug and play lool
-
What car are you putting it in? Retaining rod change box or converting to cable change abf one? What year is the abf?
-
J reg mk2 8v GTI.. dont know whats easier rod or cable ?? 1997 ABF..
-
Rod change is easier as you just use your existing 'box and driveshafts and the flywheel and clutch off your mk2. If you want to use the cable change you have to convert to hydraulic clutch and fit cable change shifter. I believe you can fit the mk3 pedal box with a slight (easy) modification but not sure you can use the mk3 shifter mech - b4 passat or corrado I think, but not done it myself..
The brakes on the mk3 will be 288mm and 5x100 so unless you are converting to widetrack mk3 then the hubs and brakes are no good. Definitely need to upgrade to 256mm (mk2 16v) brakes on the front I reckon, 280mm if you want to spend a few more pennies. For this you will need 16v/g60 hubs and the appropriate calipers.
Bare minimum from mk3;
Engine
Wiring loom/ecu
immobiliser box/transponder/chip/obd plug/appropriate wiring
ecu relay no. 30 (relay slot 3) and might as well lift 99 relay too for intermittant wiper mod.
Pic of immob wiring;

right ok.. so dont need a lot then off the mk3 really..
whats the advantages of converting to hydraulic clutch ?? and cable change ??
can i remove the front brakes / hubs off the mk3 and fit them with the mk3 box ??

I'm pretty sure the crossflow head you'll want is off a mk4 1.4 engine. I've read about people putting this head on the 2.0 8v bottom end from a mk3 , but having to plug a few holes up (I'm no expert on the subject, just trying to remember what I've read).
At the end of the day, like said above, ABF would be easier and more output, but both conversions have been done before, and it's you're choice whether you prefer 8v or 16v.

02A 'box off the mk3 is stronger, but 020 'boxes will take 200bhp ok so no probs with a na abf. I'd just stick with your 8v 'box, will be fine.
Re the brakes etc, do a search for 'mk2 widetrack' and see what's involved.
-
lovely thanks mate.. think i will stay with the box i have in there.. so literally all i gota do is bolt the lump into position and plug it all in and bobs your uncle ??
I believe the immob has been disarmed from the mk3 as my mate had problems with it.. will this cause issues ??
-
Well, when you say it fast it sounds easy  I'd remove the complete lump and 'box from your mk2, swap the flywheel and clutch onto the abf, refit the 'box then put it back complete. You've got to remove the mastercylinder/servo too to get the wiring out and fit the mk3 wiring. Also got to run a wire to the mk3 coil to run the rev counter, or wire in the tci unit and mk2 coil instead. Then if you want to fit the ecu in the standard mk2 location you've got to extend the loom to the ecu - 32 wires = 64 solder joints (not fun btw), but does mean you can fit the mk2 raintray rubber sleeve.
Also think about the induction side, need an airbox from Seat ibiza/toledo if you want it to look standard, or get and induction cone.
-
Oh, and if the immob has been removed from the ecu then that makes it more simple, but I'd keep all the wiring/transponder/key etc just in case. Might also be worth wiring in the vagcom plug so you can do diagnostics if required in the future

In essex also  !!

Think i may stick with looking for a wrecked mk3/2 gti, then i can rip all the bits off i need.
so i can litterally plug and play all the bits from a mk3 golf gti, just change to an mk2 020 box, and rod assembly, and thats it ????????

No can do Wurth the cars worth more to be being broken for parts.. Cheers for info guys sorry for hijack of thread..
