Driving my 96 8v golf gti is starting to get me a bit nervous
When i go round a bend it feels like the rear end kind of dips down and feels like im gonna lose the rear end, really weird.
Quite hard to explain but just wondered if anyone else has experinced this? could the shocks be nackered??
-
Could be the rear shocks or springs or the rear axle bushes are known for failing and this can cause a twitchy feeling. Have a look underneath and see if the bushes look squashed.
-
sorry im a complete novice at all this, where abouts are the bushes :embarassed:
-
check all bushes, trye pressures but I would guess rear axle bushes (which are a swine to remove/fit!)
Check the rear axle and you will see them at each end of this between the axle and body (with a large bolt in the middle)
-
Good call on tyre pressure! Ive had this before, it transformed the handling when I pumped em up!
-
ok cheers is check em out, if it is the rear bushes gone whats it likely to cost me with parts and labour at a local garage?
-
wish is was just tyre pressure but ive just had the tracking done and they checked all the tyres the same time

if they have the special fitting tool then £200...if not then it's possibly a much longer job and around £300 (thats ooop north prices b.t.w)
-
crap thought as much  and if thats up north prices i dread to think what cheltenham prices are
cheers guys for you help anyway, need to have a think, dont wanna spend anymore money on the car,had it a month and already spend 400 on it and it cost me 500,throwing money away so may have to just sell it in the new year
-
the good thing is you know it wont need the work again....my old gti cost me a fair few £££ in the early days but was trouble free for the following several years

£200?
We had a 6N Polo done and cleaned up in three hours. Think my boss charged £99 + VAT.
Burned and cut the bushes out too.
-
Yeah, my mate got the rear axle bushes done for £150 all in last year!
-
Internet prices always seem cheaper than real life.
Here down south, i doubt you could get it done for less than £250.
-
I'm South East London blaad.
Perhaps 6N's are easier. :undecided:

I know the golf needs the brakes detaching and the full axle dropping for access (unless your lucky!) and also the abs is in the way on 1 side making no room to remove the large bolt
-
Autodata gives 2 hours for removing the axle.
But that is on a new car, chances are something if not everything will be completely seized.
-
Yeah we got the beam right off as the gas torch wouldn't reach.
Spose there was two of us on it, fair enough.

Took me 1 hour, 1st time :)
Somwhere on here is how i did it :)
-
1 hour to change rear axle bushes
Have you got a link?
-
Ill try and find it, imade a tool to get them back in, which is where most people have the problems!

There you go :)
took far longer to get the axle off and back on than it took to put the bushes in :)
-
Are you saying 1 hour to fit the bushes or do the whole job?
-
Bushes, both sides. Its a b!tch to get the axle back on though as its needs to be perfectly lined up. Getting it off is easy though :)
-
I thought so.
That tool looks pretty good.
Yours came out quite easily, mostly they don't.
Like i said, book time is 2 hours to remove and fit the axle, if you are very good and very lucky!!
-
Its certainly worth trying it yourself before losing £150+ at a garage :)
-
Mine felt the same, the problem went when I fitted coilovers so could be knackered shocks.

+1. Knackered dampers can make life very interesting. Also, what tyres are on the car? My 'Valver seems quite sensitive to different tyres. Had some el cheapo ones for a brief period which were predictably (or rather worrying unpredictably ) awful. Of the decent stuff, I've found Dunlop and Pirelli to work quite well but tried a set of Goodyears and things got a bit weird; no shortage of grip but very short of feel. Admittedly things aren't as critical on the back so unlikely to be your problem but worth a thought maybe.
S.M.

IMO lowering a car could put enough pressure on failing bushes to firm them up a bit to appear solid.

Well the mk3 was underdamped from new which does not help, I would add that when I removed the old shocks they both looked to be leaking, don't think I had any issues with rear bushes the car had only done 51k from new.
-
One of my old shocks had popped itself - felt like it was going to let go on right handers and bobbed and weaved. When I switched to coilies problem went away.
When I checked in with the Phirm to get a price on ym rear bushes they reckoned about 3 and a bit hours labour at £60 ex VAT plus the price of the bushes too.
-
That sounds about right :/
-
Mine feels just like that, not had a good look yet as only had it a few days but im sure the bushes are mot failable if shot yet the car was moted a couple of weeks ago. Also i can make the rear end bounce just by lightly blipping the throttle which does say to me the shocks are deffo donald! any way coilovers going on soon so should cure it? fingers crossed......
