Right, whilst doing my car ( because Ive bitten off more than I can chew) I've realised I want to get rid of it as soon as its in a sellable state!
Im just wandering, how reliable would one of these fully reconned mk2's be? Would they still need the same attention as the old ones or should they be near enough like a new car?

A good solid car should only need general wear and tear parts. So yes more reliable

depends who fully recons it!
recon engine should come with a warranty so no probs there, likewise all the brakes/suspension/bushes are all well served for reconditioning or available new so no probs there either. personally the biggest question mark in my mind would be over body repairs/welding and possibly wiring looms, again perfectly repairable and looms acan be remade (no idea if they are avilable new) but a botched loom will give you an expensive german disco and a bad enough shell is just a disaster.

I havnt found anyone doing them, just seen them about, people do a full resto on one its like £5-6k.
Ive been off for 3 weeks, and in them 3 weeks I could of got my ms working, but know gotta get into the swing of that again, theres quite alot of rust so got to ask my dads mate to see if hell sort it out for me, and I just think its going to give me problems in the future too, and I wanna save up for a house and not keep spending on the car.

Thats why you need to have a good one in the first place... Bit late now mind... :shocked:
There comes a point where you spend so much getting it sorted that nothing else can go wrong... But by then you may have lost interest and then the next buyer gets all the benifit of all your money!! :laugh:
If you want a car that don't cost much and don't need any work doing - then DON'T Buy a 20+ year old car!!!

If you're saving for a house don't spend 5-6 grand on restoring a mk2 golf!!!!
Sort the car out, functionality wise...make it work how it should, polish it, sell it, then buy a push bike.... you'll save no end!:smiley:

I aint restoring :huh: I know you should get a good one but when theres rust under the rear lights then how would I of found that lol.
ah whatever anyway ill just fix it and sell it then Least ill know how to find a decent one in the future!

I have a dry stored - since 1999 - mint, zero rust, Mk2 3 door shell begging me for a restoration, but I can't be arsed as the valver is still alive.

Rust is the only issue I would personally be concerned with, what areas need doing? If its just the usual arches etc not a huge problem and common.a sorted mk2 as in OEM+ yes 5 to 6k but all depends on what has been done and condition of the shell.

One of my sills has gone, not sure if its mot fail yet but still its a massive whole in my car :( under the rear left headlight, I poked some bubbling and the pen went straight through, and just on the rear theres a weird hole. If i knew what I knew know I could pick a minter quite easily. Im lucky my dad mates a bodyshop manager, but he never replied too my text, so think he knows whats involved! lol
Erm Id ideally I'd want rust free, good paintwork good interior and have a supercharged 2.0 16v engine. Only other car Id have is a mini cooper s which would be as fun, but then thatd be an 02 plate so old in itself!

I thought it was rust ridden that's nothing a bit of sheet metal a hammer and a mig welder can't sort.

I'll get some pics up, the boot one looks very awkward, theres lilttle bits too but they are the holes, the battery plate bit could do with being fixed up and some around the washer jets.

dude, that is nowt. Get a list of what you need, buy it then set aside some time to get it done.
I bought mine knowing that it needed new sill, mind you it was verrrrry cheap. In hindsight I would probs have preffered to have bought a rust free one, but that's life. This way I get to do the car the way I want. Found more rust subsiquent but hey, I'm a dab hand with the MIG now :smiley:

If you find a truely rust free one at the right money then great, as often gets said the bolt on bits are cheap and plentiful, having owned such cars as capris, cortinas, and i am ashamed to say a nova i am of the opinion that unless you know and trust the person mending it you are better off repairing it yourself- my last cortina had been 'restored', resprayed, and flew through its m.o.t but was very touch and go in a lot of structural places within 6months....
also it depends on what you are willing to call rust free, personally i dont care as long as its straight and strong, i daresay theres a few mothballed pristine examples still out there but they will fetch bucks now, 20 years on british roads WILL have started the tinworm to some extent, the only question is whether you see it before yo hand your cash over.
i'll take an honest pig and a bit of work over an expensive one and the same amount anyday.

And theres a rusted sill but you know what thatll look like!
Do they seem like a nightmare fix? My rear window has water droplets inside, the rubber seal as you can see is wet so does that mean its duff and is letting in water into the boot, or would the 3 holes cause that? only just started to steam up recently. And also theres a hole under neath that same rear light.
Is it bad??? Or am I worrying about nothing!

Oak Green 3 door big bumper 16v? Rebuild and MOT it, stick it for sale on Ed 38 and Pistonheads, and get rid for reasonable money.
Then buy a cheaper solid 8v '90 spec with the money, ready for the 2.0 16v conversion.

Thats what I would do If i bought another mk2 after this one, Ill see how much the repair work is and if it owes me loads then I'll sell it, should get a decent amount of ed38, it's been megasquirted, well nearly has lol And yes but its an 88 big bumper conversion 2.0l 16v (9a) :undecided: I didnt do it!
