Title: Halfaurds Spray paint and chip repair.

Hiya

Winter is taking its toll on my golf with new chips popping up here and there. I've seen these 3 little tubes of primer, paint and lacquer kits in Halfords.

Has anyone any experience with them? I'm after using satin silver which is a pain to match anyway.

Also thinking of going debadged when i get the chance to weld the notch. Is the halfords spray paint a good match to factory?

The spray tins aren't a bad match to be honest but I don't think the chip set is very good unless you can cut it back after all coats. The previous owner of mine had done it and it just left obvious raised welts. Good luck with whatever u do though!

If you get the paint matched at the paint bit instead of a tim its a better match.

the chip stick kit is pap, fiddly and the end result with the shade i was using was a totally different colour! wouldnt advise.

For a quick fix its fine aspecially if the chip is down to the metal the repair will stop any further corrosion, if your looking for a proper fix all you can do is get it repainted.  :sad:

Argh i might have to leave them then  :cry: Would people agree that the instored mixed spray cans from halfords are better than the premixed ones?

Yeah I would say going in with your paint code and getting it mixed up is the best bet/ option. However, silver is a mare to match given that there will have been slight fade over time.
A good sprayer would be able to blend but in the short term if you don't want to get into painting a whole panel I would suggest... Getting a tin mixed up then spray into a suitable container (the lid if you're really lazy) get a toothpick and use that to fill in your stone chip. takes a wee while letting it dry etc in between but imo produces a far more satisfactory outcome than the chipstix. :nerd:

I've had the opposite experience - pre mixed ones will be done by machine in a factory, so should be fairly consistent (although sometimes consistently wrong!)

The in store stuff relies on a guy measuring the different mix colours by hand and pouring them into a container. If you get a really good, experienced and anal guy on the paint desk then you could get a close match. If you have the part-time teenager with little interest in cars, earning a bit in Halfords to pay for the weekend booze, you may not be so lucky.

Go to VW for paint if you can afford it, or try someone like Paints 4U - as said above spray a little paint in a container and use a toothpick.
