Hello All,
1st post here, so apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.
I am going to look at a mk2 gti 8v on saturday, and I am a little concerned about the mileage. Its on 143k.
I know these engines are renound for going round the clock a few times, but how long will this last? will it need rebuilding soon? and if so, what might need doing. Any ideas on cost would be good too.
What other things should I look out for?
I've never owned a VW before, and would like to know the usual problems etc.
Best regards,
Chris.
-
143k is nothing. people have got 200k+ golfs on their original engines and they run sweeter than ever. As long as it runs ok then the mileage shouldn't be a problem. you'll find a buyers guide in the classifids section in the golf+ magazine saying what to look out for with the mk2s.
-
Cheers for the reply Dizzie.
I hope the car is ok then, as I've wanted one for ages! Just never been able to insure them.
I'll pop into town at lunch and buy a golf mag for the buyers guide.
If anyone else has any suggestions on what to look for, it would be a great help.
Cheers,
Chris.

hello mate,
Make sure the engine does not smoke. test drive it and check all the gears seem ok as the ball and cup tend to ware, get a mate to go with ya and check the engine mounts are ok by putting it in 1st the move the clutch up and down to see if the engine rocks and clonks. dont want any rocking or clonking
Usual checks with oil and water, tyres and zorst, find out if the car has history ect
Test the hand brake is working, check the con of the discs and pads.
give her a good goin over

Have a read through this aswell:

Definately some useful info in there to make sure you are prepared.

cheers Tobz.
I will take a look at that later this afternoon. Some useful guides on there!
I just hope I find one in my budget.
EDIT: Oh, and thanks Tucker, didn't notice your reply till now!
-
How much are you looking to spend then Chris???
-
I'm too embarrassed to tell you!
The one I am looking at on Saturday is advertised for ?300. I'm not expecting much tbh.
-
There are some bargains to be found if you look around.
I bought a 1989 8v for ?300 with a few months mot last summer while I was looking for the car in my sig pic. It turned out to be a great car, I had to do a bit of work on the brakes but after spending a few weekends under it I managed to get it through another mot. I would have loved to keep it as a second car but couldn't afford the insurance on two gti's so I ended up with a 1.3 mk2 golf as my winter runabout.
Put a post in the cars wanted section on here, there are quite often people selling cars for that sort of money on here (infact I bought the 8v last year off a forum member).
Definately check out ebay aswell 8v mk2's quite often sell for under ?500 on there (would be worth looking at before the end of the auction though).

i got mine off ebay for 275, it didnt have an MOT but did have a failure sheet that wasnt too bad, 2 outer CV boots , rear shock and brake pads , if you have a look at the project part , Ebay special racer thenyoull see it needs more thanthat now but hey , thats what happens when i get my hands on a car
-
even if parts like the engine mounts are starting to show wear they're fairly cheap and easy to replace. the front engine mount is only ?36 for the 16v one and takes like an hour tops to change.
Give it a good service when you get it. oil - ?12 / oil filter (genuine) ?4.80 / fuel filter - ?5 ish / air filter ?10 ish. Then put some injector clear through the tank when you fill up.
It'll soon be running as sweet as ever
We're always here to answer questions as we have nothing better to do at work

cheers for all the replies, I shall wait and see what this tornado pink one is like in the morning.
I will also check the classified ad's, and post a wanted ad. To be honest, I would also be happy with a Driver. Although a GTI is my preference.
If I do get it, I'm sure there will be loads of questions from me about how to do stuff!
Thanks,
Chris.

I bought one! its a GTI 8v tornado pink one. ?270 in th end, so it seemed a good price.
I'll post some pics later.

dont worry about the cost, my old golf, a 1.3 not a gti, was 400 notes and lasted 18 months beofre i scrapped it cos of expensived repairs, altho, it could have gone for another few years at least!!!
-
Why did you scrap it mate?
what a waste
-
not at all a waste. i got the old grille
-
I could of had it
-
yeah b!tch, and i wasnt there to claw money out of your wallet. . .
6, i had to scrap it cos i needed new brakes all round, and shocks, the clutch was about to die, it had gone mouldy whilst i was at uni. ?And i didnt have the time or the money to repair any of it
-
Why didn't Ed do the repairs?
Simple enough on a 1.3
-
i got 2 for 1,8 5dr 8v gti,s 4r ?220 , (cant beat that with a big sh!tty stick) considering my 1.6 driver has 150k on clock and i boot the shizzney out it every day and it runs it starts and runs brilliant , so what im saying is have a look at gtis in breakers , and think about how much work ule need 2 do, cause these cars 1nce up and running are the best out , gti driver mrk2 the best ever car EVER

I wasnt the repairs that bothered me, it was because i simply couldnt afford to buy the patrs as im now living at uni, so it had to go

Well, here are some pics of how it is now!
After spending all afternoon with cutting compound and polish, it now looks 100 times better, no more tornado pink for me. I didn't take any before pics though, but I'm well happy.

Please excuse the pic quality, it was dark (I spent too long trying to polish the damn thing!) I'll take some better ones soon.
I spose it looks like just another GTI to you, but I love it. So much fun to drive. (I had a mk3 astra 1.4 before? :embarassed:).
?270 aint bad is it? its a D reg, with Tax and MOT till June. All it needed was two tyres, and everything else seems fine. I'm not booting it too much yet though. I want to check the cambelt first. how easy is it to change the belt on an 8 valve?
-
nice price paid mate.
polish those wheels up with some G3 cutting paste and they will come out like mirrors

Will they? I thought they were beyond repair, as the laquer has come off them. I'm not familiar with G3 paste. I've got some PEEK metal polish, but that isn't abrasive enough I don't think.

yea man i think ule find that sunbleached pink, he he , mines is the same ill get pic soon

Was it me that made it sticky? if so, how do I un-stick it!?!?

Well mate i bought my golf mkii 8v 6 years ago with 121000 on clock. It has now done 216500 ish and is still going strong. Had to replace head gasket at 135000ish and gearbox at 150000 ish. Original gearbox did not let me down however it sounded a bit rough. Appart from general bits and bobs thats all and it is still a great car. I do drive to work every day though wondering if today will be the day that it dies on me.
It smoked the day i bought it and it still smokes now but this is only when thrashing it.

If you sand the flat surface first with a DA sander, and then flat it with 600 grit wet or dry paper, and then polish it with G3 (or Solvol Autosol), they will come up beautifully. It is quite hard work (it'll give you a bit of a work-out!) but it isn't difficult, and it's up to you how well you do them! Doing a perfect job will take plenty of time, but it will make your car look AWESOME (they are really pretty wheels, IMHO). And the beauty of the teardrop wheels is that you can leave the grey bits in the holes alone, and then either just run them as polished ally (in which case you will have to look after them very well and wash them about 5 times a week when they are salting the roads, like now!) or lacquer the whole lot with clear lacquer (after wet-or-drying the teardrops a bit to give them a key and clean all the cruddy brake dust deposits off). No masking to do - although it will be a lot easier if you take the tyres off the rims, which is a pain because you won't have anything to stand the car on!
They are so easy to do! I wish mine were - they are P-slots, and are much harder to do because I want to paint them, and I haven't yet worked out a reasonably non-time-consuming way of masking off the P's! Someone told me there used to be a VAG genuine template available, but if it was I don't think it is now! Any suggestions or tweaks welcome - I might even consider running them as polished (which would solve the masking problem) if anyone can tell me a way of avoiding the painted plastic centre cap looking silly against the polished ally.
Cheers - hope this helps - Alan (Teacher's Pet)

mines done 115k and is runnin sweeter than ever  they still need lots of TLC though
-
I bought mine (an 88f 8v) when it had 104K on the clock. Original plan was to run it for a bit and get a newer big bumper 16v. THere was a bit of rust here and there but it was pretty much ok mechanically. So I thrashed it around, let the body work slowly go, expecting it to last a few years.
The small bumper look gradually grew on me (specially when you've put some half decent alloys, the twin 5 spoke wolfrace 15'' suit it nicely), and the totally OTT magnex exhaust sounds lovley.
Despite rust now peeking from here and there, and liberal abuse with me  at the helm, the poor old dear is now at 299810 miles  (currently being serviced as I type - everything crossed )
The secret being regular servicing and watching oil consumption (sometimes I swear she was drinking more 10W40 than unleaded) and getting on top of small problems quickly. In fact knock on damage from parts going (such as the water pump, by the time I stopped the head gasket was shot) is the biggest worry.
Other things to watch out for are badgers, rover drivers, and fitting substandard replacement panels (which is where the majority of the rust is).
The only major problem I have is the embarrasment when a well looked after, clean and shiny MK2 hoves into view. Oh and being stopped by the police every 5 seconds for driving what looks at first glance like an old heap!

Bugger me, thats sh!t loads a miles, i though my brothers old q reg had one alot and the was on about 250k, take a picture when its just ticking over 300k!!!
I know what you mean about the oil tho, they just sometimes munch throigh gallons in wekks
