Well, like having flu aint enough, my heart is in my mouth as the other half drives off in my mk5 due to her windscreen wipers just not budging at all...no noise, no fuss, just a case of "pah, if you think I'm moving" kinda attitude from them.
I've replaced the spindles previously as they were worn, but this is different. Anyone know where the motor is, has pics to give me a head start...either that or i'll be getting a second hand Haynes manual. Does the motor control by any other ancillary parts? And how much are they new? Its just after Christmas, I'm brasic, and i fear for the safety of the Monza's in the hands of the other half!! :lipsrsealed:

linkage? i forgot to say that i replaced the linkage with the spindles as most people suggested doing the lot in one go...made my life easier at the time...if its a case of the linkage needing freeing again, then it'll be a sh1tty job to do in this weather with cold hands :sad:
last time though, the actual motor was still making a noise...this is dead...no noise no nothing?? Are you sure Rich?

Ah if you have already done the linkage im sure it will be the motor :sad:
You can check when you remove the motor that the linkage is running free.

So is this run from the starter motor?? Confused now, which seeing as I have serious case of Flu (note - not manflu but FLU just in case the missus is watching me type!!!) as I thought it was a separate motor?? If it is the starter then its fine....the car fires into life with no issues.
The car BTW is a TDi 2001...dunno if that hinders things?

To keep the battery from going flat I turned the car over and gave the wiper stalk a single swipe...noise from motor under the bonnet so fingers crossed it's the linkage again!

Right then...£230 saved by doing this, and it's easier than it seemed to just fix the siezed linkage and all now working...took some photos as I went along so will do walk through later :smiley:

Well easy enough to strip the actual linkage and to free off.
Flip the caps off the windscreen wiper arms to get to the retaining nut. Undo the nut slightly but not full and lift the wiper arm off the screen and it should wiggle loose...then remove the nut.

remove the skuttle panel by going to the right hand side and unscrewing the smuggle over the pollen filter. Then lift the skuttle up from the windscreen edge and away. This can be a bidditch and the trick is to start at the corners...do not use anything against the screen ie screwdrivers as it is likely to crack.

Next remove the linkage, there are 3 retaining nuts with washers...worth checking the state of them at the same time. To get the motor connector off can be tricky as my wiring was quite short. Once disconnected then remove the whole linkage and motor.

Next it time to make note of the orientation of the linkage and motor arm...then remove the motor by dropping the couple of nuts/bolts off. Make note of the orientation of the linkage.
Then it's time to free the linkage off...i then had to rmove the spindles from the linkage. Mine weren't too bad. C clip wanted to fly off tho and was a bugger to find :grin: Once out I thoroughly greased them and reversed the whole process.

I found it easier to replace the skuttle by removing the end caps around the bonnet/A pillar also a bit of silcone based lube may help

Forgot to say that this is also useful for replacing the linkage when the spindles are worn for the wiper arms
