I've had my 8V GTI for about 2 mths now and have been trying to get it over 100mph on the motorway. Basically the thing cruises at 80 very nicely, the pull from 80 - 90 is just about acceptable, but to go from 90 to 100 is hard. It's like it's run out of power. OK it does eventually reach 100 but it will only edge upwards but it takes a long time.
I thought top speed was supposed to be about 115 or 120??
It's not modified and I don't intend to make any mods. Can the brand of petrol make any difference? What about normal vs super unleaded
Anyone else with similar frustrations?
-
You should be able to get over 100 quite easily. Check static ignition marks line up, i doubt ignition timing is adjustable. What fuel are you using? shouldn't make any difference unless you have a faulty knock sensor. Any other problems you have noticed?
-
I tend to fill up at Tesco or Esso, using the normal unleaded petrol.
Thought maybe a switch to super unleaded might improve things, but I wouldn't expect a drastic increase in top speed.
-
Have you tried putting the car on a fault reader? might show something up. Sounds to me like the timing is out or a faulty knock sensor. Does the engine pink under load?
-
if the timing is out, would that mean that the car cannot be driven smoothly?
what does the knock sensor do?
I'll get the car put on diagnostics soon.
Thx
-
If the timing is out the car would be ok to drive, depends how much out. Acceleration and top speed could be affected. The knock sensor is a sensor screwed into the block which monitors knocking(or pre ignition) , if this occurs the sensor sends a signal to the ecu telling it to retard the ignition timing. If the sensor was faulty you could have a problem with normal unleaded, or if the sensor was loose in the block it will tell the ecu the engine is knocking when it isn't, retarding the ignition timing which would affect performance.
-
OK - I'll go check it out.
Thx for the help

Ive had 130mph out of my 8 valve, it does a ton for fun, who says these babies are slow! Just your standard unleaded too. I'd be seriously worried if i could only get those sort of speeds. Probably part x it.
-
130 out of an 8v? I think you got a fast speedo! ;)
-
Fast speedo my arse! Nope 130 it was! On the autoroute in France passing LeMan, nearly on the red line though no BS! oh and ive had 125 out of it over here. Takes its time after 115 granted but it gets there.
I reckon at a push it could do 135
How fast u had VR6? I was a passenger in a mates VR6 at 145 on the M69 but he says he had 155 and I reckon thats the limit. Its quick to arrive there too!
-
Top speed for the vr6 is 140, speedos are generally 10% fast so will probably make up for the extra. Is your 8v modded Glen?
-
Nope no mods standard engine. Surprised me too but honestly 130 it said, and as for the VR6 145 and still going (his missus screamed at him to slow down!) book speeds i take no notice of they dont take into account the engines probably done 60k and is getting nice and loose. What u had out of yours VR6?
-
I don't go that fast anymore, i'm a good boy :o
I did get over 130mph out of a mk2 16v a few years ago ;D
-
Glen are you sure the car hasn't been chipped already?
-
I dont think so it was owned by The House of Fraser for a company car before me so I doubt it. How could I tell anyway?
I havent been in any other 8valves only a VR6 and that was a different league so nothing to compare to ???
Maybe some trainee at the VW factory put some VR6/16valve parts in by mistake (wishes)!!!!!!!
but seriously though 130 aint all that you get Vectras and stuff that do that, the new Mondeo 1.8 can and thats a Ford!
-
VR6 youre not Dwayne Chambers are you?
-
The 16v mk3 top speed is only just above 130, so i didn't think the 8v would get near that.
-
Theyre still both 2litre and 'the book speed' is 124 for the 8 valve and 134 for the 16 valve so I guess with a little speedo error maybe it was 124ish but it still felt pretty bladdy quick! Still like I say when the engine loosens they do get quicker and mine had racked up 70k and just had a major service so who knows?
Anyway maybe now youll give us 8 valvers the respect we deserve! We may still be show but we have got some go! ;)
-
When i did over 130mph in my old mk2 16v it scared the sh!t out of me ;D
-
Its a rapid feeling allright!!!!
-
Yeah its bloody scary in a mk2 ;D
-
No wonder it was knackered when I bought it VR6.
;)"only pulling your pisser geezer" ;)
you cant beat a good wink

I sorted the timing in my car. It's so much better now - actually feels quite fast! Got it to 105 without too much trouble and it had some left, but I chickened out (I was on the M25 at night)
Can't wait for the chance to test it properly. Hope I don't get pulled over....
-
Was the timing out by quite a bit?
-
he didn't say - just told me he adjusted the timing and it should feel better.
accelaration is much better in all gears and the car revs more freely. I don't feel the need to change up at 4000.
I now don't regret having bought a golf gti
thanks
-
Nice one ;) Go and get it chipped plus induction kit and exhaust ;D
-
actually, I've been weighing up the pros and cons of mods.
Don't know too much about it so what do I start with? I'm not going to do it all in one go, so is it possible to start with something relatively inexpensive?
It's really the effect on the insurance premium that puts me off doing anything.
-
As far as mods go, insurance is the main problem as far as I can see. You may get away with a chip without telling the insurance companies but if youre going for exhausts etc, if you have an accident youre insurance will be void. So if you mod it youd better get new insurance.
New insurance more cost :(
-
Got to be worth the extra money? :D Surely the mods i suggested would make the 8v much quicker, quicker being cool 8)
-
I guess when the time comes and I feel I need something faster, I'll get a VR6.
-
Yep 8)
-
This is odd.
You guys telling us that you can cap 130 mph from a STANDARD 8v 2.0 ?
The fastest I had in my old 93, mk3 2.0 8v was 125 and that was down a steep hill. After being cambelt tuned. And my current cab, caps out at about 120. 130 ???
-
some optimistic speedo readings me feels... 10% over sounds about right
try over 100 mph driving a car where your head is just above knee-height! Sevens and Westies man, you gotta love em...
from 60 to 100mph in a tuned TDi in 5th, much quicker than a GTI...
:)
-
Yeah u should easily get over 100mph... mine only starts to accelerate slowly after about 115Mph ... but then again ive had ?2500 worth of engine parts in mine WOOO ... LMAO!! 8)
-
I recently installed an Origin B2 in my VR6, which has a very accurate GPS Speedometer. I was shocked at how inaccuarate the Mk3 Golf speedo actually is.
With 130mph on the speedo, actual speed indicated by the GPS was just 121mph.
121 sounds about right for top-end on a standard 2.0 8V, so I believe Glen's speedo reading.
