Well all I have to say about winter tyres is I think they are a good call...... and I wish I had some!

For the 2nd time in the 8 months of owning (5 months of driving) my MK6 GTI, I have one word to sum up my feelings...... "gutted"!

Ah well, I guess no one was hurt and so it's Mr insurance man to the rescue again!

PS scuse the grill, it should be red however paint.net seems to have changed the colour?

Oh dear! So sorry for this to have happened.

New bumper, new grille, fix bonnet. Have the front wings been moved backwards?

£1500+. Ouch!

Glad you are ok. Get yourself some winter wellies.

The front wings haven't moved. What's gonna cost is the front spoiler (£695 on e-bay - I guess more from the dealer). I was going to just get myself a new grill until the insurance comes through! And then I saw the prices!

Grille approx £160 + VAT. I know, I had to have a new one.

Factoring in the new bumper price which I got a bit wrong, £2000+! Ouch, ouch, ouch!

Winter tyres wouldn't have stopped you any faster if it makes you feel any better.

I feel for anyone who has damaged their motors in this weather

Doc 'knows' winter tyres may not have helped and Martin just 'knows'.

We should wear Doc Martins and the world will be right again.

I waited a long time to say this!

Winter tyres may not have stopped me, allas we'll never know! Thanks am1w for the price update, is that before VAT?? I do like reading this MK6 forum banter you guys have. It doesn't seem to matter what the nature of the thread is, us newbies we can rely on your input :)

I worked it out approximately as follows:

Front Bumper = £700
Front Grille = £170
Paint and Materials = £200
Clips and bits 'n Pieces = £30
Labour for 20 hours @ £40/hour = £800
Total = £1900 + VAT

Remember they may have to blend-in the front wings when they paint the bonnet and the bumper.

I had a front ender whilst fiddling with the sat nav. Hit a lorry at crawling pace. Prang not as bad as yours as I did not need a front bumper. However, the nearside wing moved due to the type of impact. Anyway, it cost £1k approx and lots of hassle to get the bumper alignment perfect with the front wings.
All the best.

Oh, there's one other thing. Many VW bodyshops have started charging £65 approx to remove error codes if they disconnect/reconnect the battery during the repair! I, myself, cannot see why they have to do this if the ignition is switched off when they disconnect sensors, lights etc.

There is one good thing to come of this. When the car got returned from being nicked, it came back with stone chips on the bonnet. So hopefully I can get these done when the repaint it!?

For a car that was supposed to be a day old, it definately came back looking 6 months old by the time I got to drive it properly. Mmm I wonder if the insurance would cover a spare set of alloys for some winter boots??!

Red: You and my arse are meant to be.

Seriously, it is quite amazing how expensive it has become to fix bodywork. It will get worse with the new VAT increase.

I have only damaged my rear bumper once which was around 3 weeks ago through carelessness.

I had a warped (!) rear bumper from new in the number plate area which was, after a huge argument with VW,  replaced under a 'goodwill' gesture.

Unfortunately, my rear bumper issues turned into a long thread and have susequently become a topic of great hilarity but not to me.

But I won't deny any of you having fun at the expense of my rear.

As per my previous post, best I don't go there!
