The rear demist works on about 4 or 5 of the wires that cross the rear window, but not the rest. Is there anyway to get them all working again? Some careful inspection and repair procedure or do you have to replace the glass? (Or worse the whole door ).

If you look across the heated lines you should see the line discolour at a certain point for a short distance. This will be where the break is. At work we replace the screens only and I'd assume this is the same with a Mk3 (maybe not with a convertible?)
What you said about repairing it was interesting cos I have one down too so had a quick looky. Apparently at Halfords you can get a repair kit but I couldn't find it online and this product comes up too:

Read the reviews, some people hate it and say it doesn't work whereas some say it works great. In essence you are painting a wire so you have to be neat, use two strips of masking tape, and not use it until it dries, which in this weather maybe after 24hrs.

The above electro paint does work but it looks horrible, ive used it a few times on ratters and its worked well everytime. It just looks like someone has tipex-ed your rear screen.
-
I remember the electro paint stuff!....it was about £15 for a really small bottle a few years back and came with a crap brush. Best way to fix is new glass (although it's bonded so you'll need a glass co to fit it)

If uve windscreen cover just hit the window with a hammer and get it replaced
Assuming your insurance covers your rear screen

Well bustin the window seems a bit extreme , but I might have a go with the paint - although if its going to like tipex then I think I'd rather live with the mist.
