I have just found out that all manufacturers have stopped producing winter tyres.
They will start summer tyre production after the Christmas break.
Stocks are very, very low.
So anyone wanting these will need to order now.
Just thought I'd let you know.
-
Good timing realy as the weather had broken here and we're going to be snow free fast looking at the weather reports, can you cancel those tyres?
I have loved the snow but I'm glad I can start using the golf again

The weather might break for a few days, but temperatures are still below 7 degrees.
Remember, the worst winter months are January and February. This is only the start and we've got a long way to go yet. So I'm well prepared.
I'm delighted with my purchase and no I won't be cancelling them and yes I can't wait to put them on and use them for the next 3-4 months at least or even longer.
Have a look at this:

Cool, I have mud and snow tyres on my Disco all year round and they are quiet, grippy and stop well in the wet.
Looking forward to seeing those wheels on your car.

I have not seen them as yet. Will pop into the fitters today.
Tyres will take another 2-3 days.
Having butterflies about the storage. Have just found a secure self-storage place very near me for this purpose. They will also collect and deliver.

Snowing well here this morning and is suppose to be worse tomorrow. There are times i wish i had just got 16s in the first place.
-
Lucky Sod! It's all melting here
-
BTW: No more Continental 830Ps will be available this year. I hear that production has ended and summer tyre production has started.
Whilst on the subject, all Conti 3s are to be superseded by 5s in Jan '11.
I looked at our Mercs Conti 3s and the rim protection is rubbish, the tyres look as if they are falling to bits and 'she' has kerbed the front wheels in the last few days. The car is slipping and sliding all over the place. She had to drive the GTI yesterday (as it grips better) to get me around and loved it, except for the manual gearbox. My head was in my mouth, in case she kerbed the Monza Shadows. I had told her to get an R, but she still thinks that the Golf looks like a bread box. She's into booted cars. 4WD Audi for her next, but winter tyres for the Merc NOW. It was very slippery in North London yesterday.
-
Audi A4 with proper Quattro rather than heldex.
-
All gone here this morning, driving home on sheet ice was fun last night, summer tyres just about made it, my ass muscles are much stronger now
I'm with you Snoopy, looking at 16s and a set of 205/55R16 tyres for next year.

Yep, you are right.
She misses her Alfa 164 in weather like this. It was 4WD and had no traction problems.

I think all of you who don't have winters, better start ordering now. Next year stocks might be even worse. They'll all be gone by October.

Not really an option for most people as they aren't exactly cheap. I may get a set next year but at the moment I cannot justify another set of wheels plus four new tyres.
-
I wouldn't pay them the increase of 50% in some cases. Money grabbers. I'd much rather wait till the spring. Plus I don't believe for a minute they have stopped production regardless of what they say.
They must be raking in the money what with demand out stripping supply.
On a side note do the winter tyres perform significantly better on ice the way they do on snow?

I perfectly understand. Took me a very long time to take the plunge. And now the snow has gone. Bloody weather.

Money grabbing b@stards they certainly are.
Yes, they do perform brilliantly on snow and ice and are vastly superior on these surfaces to summers. Ask GolfTi, Gizzy, Rolfe, Neil, Ess_Three, Snoops, SteveP, Hartside, Exonian and many more.
-
Thanks I knew by the feedback they performed extremely well on snow, but just as good on ice?!
-
Nothings great on sheet ice, but winters are significantly better than a summer tyre on it. Just got to drive appropriately slowly and give it the respect it deserves. I've posted this vid again that shows the difference - stick with it until it gets to the ice rink and cornering:

Yep, they grip on ice pretty well (also very tyre dependent as some a vastly better than others) as they have a softer rubber compound with a specifically designed tread pattern which grips like a caterpillar. If you look at some of them closely, you'll notice these 'legs'!
Nature teaches us so many things!
The tyres I have purchased are not brilliant in heavy snow or very icy conditions as the tyre compound is a bit harder than most, they being W rated tyres. But I think it will be fine for use in London conditions. What they are very good for is handling which can be a bit soft with winter tyres. They are also considered to be the quietest and offer a very smooth ride.
Site below shows their rating in the USA, though they are the V rated ones.

That is one of the better videos I've seen...and perfectly illustrates the advantages.
-
Thanks. Agree with Ess_Three this is one of the better videos and certainly demonstrates it a lot clearer.
-
I saw this video early this year and it had been posted by Snoops (sorry Hartside).
I kept going back to it and had to buy winter tyres.
-
Thats the first time i've watched that video and i'm very impressed with those winter tyres, having read most of peoples experiences with them i was still a bit unsure as to how good they actually were but that really is amazing! I still can't really justify a set as i don't need the car to get about but can definately see how good they are now!

In my case definitely money well spent, I wouldn't have got up half the hills I have done this past week without them and there's more snow forecast for tonight. No problems on ice as long as take it nice and easy.

Climb every mountain,
Search high and low,
Follow every byway,
Every path you know.
Climb every mountain,
Ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow,
'Till you find your dream.
A dream that will need
All the love you can give,
Every day of your life
For as long as you live.

The snow we just had this morning is prob on its way down to you. I just cleared 2 inch of snow off the drive.

You know I have to try them out after having spent so much of my ill gotten gains!

Did not go today as toe was a bit swollen but not hurting.
I'll venture out tomorrow.
Resting after all the eating and drinking. Never eaten so much meat.
Need to go for a colonoscopy in the New Year.
-
I feel for you with your toe mate, i fell down our last 4 steps a few months back after a few shandy's, ended up in crumpled heap at the bottom up against the meter cupboard! Broke my three middle toes on my left foot, they said as i'd broken all three there was no point taping them up. It was agony for about 3 weeks. As for the meat, bran flakes with a couple of prunes! Job done.

Oh yes, the prunes. The lamb came with prunes on Saturday. But that was ok. But on Sunday, I made a 'pig' of myself eating a massive amount of organic fillet steak. It was the whole fillet of the cow and it was so good, that I must have eaten more than half of it. I could not move for 4 hours and had a massively distended stomach. Add to that, the alcohol, the painful toe: you get the picture. Could not get my overcoat around the bloody ponch.
Toe seems better, but pretty swollen. God, yours must have been a real killer. How the hell did you get around, wear shoes or function generally?
-
Didn't go out for nearly two weeks and hopped around on crutches. Getting upstairs was fun to say the least! When i could eventually get my shoes on i still couldn't drive for about another week  they're ok now but they seem to crack a lot when i'm walking.

Have you had them X-rayed.?
-
Not since it happened.

Not since it happened.
Have they set properly and look normally oriented?
Mine looks very crooked. I've taped it. It is the 7th time I have done the same toe. Looks a bloody mess at the best of times.
Ooooh, soooo off topic. But it's my thread and our toes.
-
Look pretty much as before i think, i'm not too worried as they don't hurt anymore and bend ok.

X-ray? Huh. I had my first one x-rayed. Dim b!tch said it wasn't broken. Only a rather less dim radiographer at a different hospital looking at the original film was able to spot the break.
Nine months ago and it still isn't right.
Rolfe.

I am taped/strapped and better. Can now move around.
