Title: indicator help
Post by: MrAnderson93 on 26 December 2010, 18:27
random questions but how do the indicator "clicks" work? is it a solenoid bouncing back and forth? if so in theory could i fit one form a newer car? same goes for the angry wasp that tells you youve left the headlights on, could i swap it for a newer cars unit?

and i have donned the fire-proof suit as i know im gonna get flamed hard for such a strange question    just i like changing little things like that, to add even more of a personal touch

cheers guys!

Good question to be honest, i'm not sure but it makes a change to 'which coilovers should i buy' and 'VR6 conversion, what do i do?' :D would be quite interested to know this also :)

Im not sure how the indicator circuit works, theres a hazard light relay but I'm sure the clicking sounds like its coming from the instrument cluster?

The lights on buzzer made me think though, my old Mk3 one used to work but my 16v one works randomly. Theres a gong in a footwell of most 3 series and Z4 BMWs and they have a decent 'lights on' warning tone. Never thought to try, but I have a spare one and will give it 12v at work next week and see what happens. Im sure the Mk3 just has a buzzer and operates like this.

Interesting thread, i wouldn't mind hearing some ideas on this as well.

Good question about the indicator click  If you listen carefully when your wipers are on you can hear the relay clicking faintly, but the indicators are much louder than that.
The lights-on buzzer is great on the mk3. It's so loud and horrible it's impossible to ignore. BZZZZZZZZZZ! The buzzer in the mk5 is a panicked but soft ping sound, there have been a few times I couldn't hear it over music and people talking and nearly forgot  :lipsrsealed:

indicator relay is #21, in theory any one should work as I think its a universal fitment? just a case of pulling it out and comparing the leg pinouts. lights on relay is 36, not sure if this is universal but as above pull it out and check pins against other car relays

I tried :(

(its a gong from the footwell trim of a very wet X3)  It didn't work so its possibly a speaker unit however from what Rubjonny said, is the lights on warning a relay or buzzer? There was one more plug going into it but I was running out of time to check properly

Lights on buzzer is attatched to the rear of the clocks, a small cylindrical black block

the buzzer inside the clocks is for low oil warning etc and its annoying if it goes off haha mine did on my clocks when i needed a new oil sensor, i dont think it can be located in the clocks for lights on ?

lesser golfs dont have the buzzer in the clocks for oil warning as joe found out when he put gti clocks in his (buzzer on constant so he ripped it off)

as I already said, the lights on buzzer is relay #36 on the fusebox NOT the clocks ;)
