As the title suggested is anyone up for organising a rolling road day on the dyno dynamics rollers at my place which is in Altrincham near Manchester airport?

All in the name of fun of course and all types invited?

I'll do it for free but a donation to help for heroes would be a nice idea at say between 10-20 quid per car?

Thoughts?

I'd be up for this! Manchester is more accessible for me than Hinckley, i'm sure it's the same for many others (especially Scottish members).

It could be turned into a competition to see who could raise the most money for the forum charity, North vs South

I shall spread the word a little if you like. Are there any restrictions on the rollers? i.e. any times they cannot be used? how low cars can be etc?

I've got a 2wd Dyno Dynamics rolling road setup with good cooling and single point exhaust extraction, I've not had a problem getting vehicles on or off to date but I'm sure you guys will know more about this than me

Please pm me if you need my number to talk

May well be up for this!

Doc are you saying that the RR is free? As long as we make a donation?
Normal RR cost is £30 to £40 so 20 quid is cheap!

£20 donation = 3 power runs on the dyno and I'll include a printout

We can run FWD AND RWD but there is a little setting up to run from front to rear including moving the fans, exhaust extraction etc so I'd like to do the rwd's first or last thing please, or I'll do Friday if we have a big enough demand for this service

Putting the car on the dyno and 3 runs takes around 20-30 mins so I'll start at 9am and run as long as we can - I'm thinking 7pm so we've done a good 20 cars or £400 on the day.

If anyone wants to come over on Friday the 15th I could do some vehicles that day too.

I STRONGLY recommend that YOU check fluid levels and ensure your car is upto scratch before the car is put on the rollers as I will not be responsible for any problems caused by a poorly maintained vehicle.

Above all we'll have a cracking day and make a few bob for a very good cause

Our postcode is WA14 1TF

The car can take as little or as much punishment as you like, basically the car is setup on the dyno at the correct speed to gear ratio, then we select that gear for the power runs (which is normally third gear btw) then put the pedal to the metal! We normally let off once the car reaches maximum revs, this is repeated three times to give your car a fair chance at making peak power.

However, if you'd rather not rev your car to the limit you can always ask us to stop at a certain rpm which we'll gladly do, but you may not get an accurate idea of the maximum power being achieved. By rule of thumb I normally pedal off when the power has hit it's obvious maximum.

Hope this helps.

I was unaware of your existence, or your rollers, and you live so close!!

You're officially my new best friend!

I think you should test them out before we all head up

Bobbarley's coming over for some training on the dyno, if he cuts it he'll be helping run the rollers in the day

Up you mean! 3 hour drive? Hmmmm well its beginning to look that way!

Reason for so many and I have been to JKM 3 times now, has really been to check what difference mods have made and to meet people.
First one was a place near Brooklands after fitting the K&N
Then just for fun and coz Billy wanted to check a Mk4 1.8T he had was at Silverstone.
Then the crap place at Aldermaston = Storm. (176.3bhp)
Then a place in Reading to get a more correct figure. (145 bhp)
Then JKM, twice with Golf and this last time with Passat.

I think my name will be going down but not yet! I will confirm as soon as I can.

Yea I actually know Altrincham quite well. At least the central bit around the Railway Station.
I stayed there back in the mid 80's when doing the Crown Courts extension. Would come off the M6 and use the A56 in and out.

Doc that postcode comes up as Downs Drive, which looks all Houses!?
Confused!

Of course!

It is a charity day foremost, the chance to put a car on rollers is secondary really, the excuse for attending!

Oh and about payment, is it ok that we all pay online here: http://www.justgiving.com/golfgtiforum-is-8

I suggest you include a message stating H4HRRDay, Your Name and your username so we know who's paid or is this a pain?

I'll do a poll for the refreshments so I can keep you lot happy

Just to pick up on this, there is only a tad over £400 left before we hit the target for the year, there are currently 21 people signed up which equates to £420. Lets see if we can smash that target!

I did mate, thanks a lot!

Apologies to everyone for the lack of communication at the moment, had a lot on these last couple of weeks! The workload has eased slightly for the moment so over the weekend i'll post an updated list of who is attending, who has confirmed/paid etc.

I will also send out another message to those who signed up initially and haven't replied yet. I would really appreciate it if you could reply to any messages even if it is to say that you can no longer attend. At least that way we can open up potential places for others who may wish to come

Cheers

Dom

I've not put very lowered cars on before but I presume we'll need to drive your car onto the ramps then jack the rear of the ramps up to get them level with the dyno and put something underneath the ramps while the car is being dyno'd - we're working on a solution

Would it be easier to just raise my car up a little bit. What angle is the entry to the ramp on. Cos my mates ramp i can get on but have to take my splitter of with a few scrapes.

Based on those photo's i'd say you'd have to be 'dickhead low' to not get on the ramps

Btw splitters are there to be broken

That would be unlucky to be honest but am sure it wont be the only car of the day.

It'll be a good golf+ spread. Just photos of golfs not being able to get on the ramp and broken splitters all over the place

Ur too good to us doc. How is it at getting lowered cars on then?

I've not put very lowered cars on before but I presume we'll need to drive your car onto the ramps then jack the rear of the ramps up to get them level with the dyno and put something underneath the ramps while the car is being dyno'd - we're working on a solution

jkm jack the arse end up, then stick some wheels under ramps and then lower it back down

as per

Ur too good to us doc. How is it at getting lowered cars on then?

I've not put very lowered cars on before but I presume we'll need to drive your car onto the ramps then jack the rear of the ramps up to get them level with the dyno and put something underneath the ramps while the car is being dyno'd - we're working on a solution

jkm jack the arse end up, then stick some wheels under ramps and then lower it back down

as per

Kinda where we ended up, thank you

I am in that photo!

I'll be perfectly honest and this is no way a critisism but in my experience of Rolling Roads the morning session will finish a lot earlier than you expect!
Now if you want a lot of dead time in between then fine, thats what you will get!
The last three times at JKM have been finished by 1 at the most and that was up to 20 cars.
The last time was done by 12 and that I think was 15 cars.

All I can say is I will be there as early as I can.

Also i've tried to arrange it so that the people who have said they are going to be there all day are in the last few time slots. That way if we find we're ahead of schedule we can put someone from the last few slots in earlier in the day

I'm sure that Craig will also appreciate a little bit of time in between runs to have a chat with people and nose around cars etc

Since I posted that I did realise that all the other RR's I had been to had 2 people setting up, now if The Doc is doing most of that himself it will take a little longer.
But I would still guess at 15 mins per car.

Talking of coffee breaks and chilling in between might be an idea if folk could bring some folding chairs or plastic patio ones? Just a thought!

Could do with a couple of spare wheels with tyres on for under the ramps if any of the early birds have got some we could loan?

Not long to go now guys!

Can I just suggest that everybody checks that their car is in a fit state to go on the rollers before Saturday, i.e. all fluids checked, no leaks etc. The last thing we want is to be fishing bits of engine out from the rollers

General directions,

M6 JN19 follow signs for Altrincham for around 8 miles keep going straight over roundabouts etc road bends but stays the same road - when you come to a Toyota garage turn right at the lights adjacent to it, go up hill and at the crest (approx 1/4 mile) turn right onto Canal Road, then 1/8 mile turn first left into MANWAY industrial estate, go straight down to the bottom and we're the last unit on the left TECHNOLOGIES HOUSE.

My number is on the web: http://www.carbon-chiptuning.co.uk/contact.html

Ok, just totted up the total raised from the day! By my calculations (and these may be wrong as it is late and has been a very long day!) we raised in total £503.87 including Chuff's donation whenever that is made

So another big thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a good day, and helped to raise a decent amount of money for a very worthwhile cause :afro:

The shortest time we normally have cars on the rollers is around half a day and the longest around a week when we're doing EU drive cycle runs so one every 20 mins is a massive difference to us

I'll let the young 'uns do the strapping next time but this time round I needed to know the best way to strap each type onto the dyno as I've only had mk4, 5's and 6's to date.

Got to say we all enjoyed ourselves and I'm happy that we made over 500 squid for help for heroes

Lets get your wagon mapped and have a rematch soon me thinks as we had some not running too well and some VERY low ones that I clearly need to KICK the crap out of more on the dyno

and I'll go first next time

My suggestion for next year is to install a weigh-bridge at Carbon so that we can all pretend to fall out about torque to weight ratios.

Mature or what?

Ian in a Mini?? surely a hazard for the headlining.

- Could look a bit like a giraffe in a phone box, - now that I'd like to see.

Sunroof and full face helmet could be the answer but what have you Lincolnshire lads got against cars with suspension travel? I've driven over there and the roads are no smoother than on the Westside..
