hello all. really need some help with the mk2 before i torch the damn thing. its been rolling roaded, and runs very well. starts 1st time, and when warmed through runs almost perfect (though a little rich). all of a sudden from nowhere its developed major pinking, under the slightest of load. i noticed it on the way into work on friday, going slowly into my workplace. the car sounds ok on tickover, with a slight misfire, and when revved on the spot sounds ok, its just when moving. it used to suffer from a wee bit of leaning out in the hot summer days, under full throttle loaded up in 4th/5th, but this was a v quiet high pitch ringing noise. the det im getting now sounds like a bag of spanners in comparison, and its happening in every gear. i initially backed the dizzy right off, and the noise has gone, however its misfiring and running hot and like crap for being so far out.. the adv/ret on the dizzy/ecu has been checked with a strobe, its advances when revving, and when slowing down backs off to the diamond mark again.. the fuel side is still running rich, all plugs are black and sooty like theyve always been,so imguessing its not a fuel prob? if the fuel flow/pressure was so far off to be detting that bad, im sure it wouldnt start and tickover like it does?? really dont know what to check now, my mechanic has looked over it and cant work it out, i suppose it could be metering head/airflow flap but i dont know how to test these 100% accurately... has anyone suffered this aswell, or got any suggestions for me? please help im losin alot of love for the old girl now.

get the fuel pressures checked, its the only way to know for sure that the metering head and wur are working properly. have you checked the co yet? another thing to add to the list would be a fuel injector test. if it was me though i would be thinking about getting shot of the k-jet and moving on to either proepr abf managment or standalone such as megasquirt

yeah, long term wise i think i will, should have bought a mk3 16v for the conversion rather than the mk2 16v.. ive ended up replacing most of the parts already anyway, so im a bit too comitted to it to jus rip it out now. plus i really need the car sorted asap! its so weird. still over fuelling/running rich but pinking badly. wil try and get sum guages and check pressures, and check cam-cam timing etc... got a chain and r/c gasket to go on anyway so back to the start for me!

Turns out the headgasket has gone. Its blowing between cyl 3-4, no water in oil or vice versa, jus between chambers. Hot compression test wasn't 2 bad, but when cold no.3 was down to 80psi..bit odd to make it knock though don't ya think. It explains the poor running/starting power loss etc though.

if HG blows between chabers it will sound like magor pinking.
very worth haveing a really good look at the piston in number 3 and makeing sure it's not overly scared. det seems to rear its fugly head on number 3 first, if it arrives in a magor way it'll often take the piston out before the head gasket so you were lucky that it took the head gasket out as the MLS gaskets are tough

What's an mls headgasket? Well a mates got it at the mo, and he knows his stuff, so he should spot damage if there is any., gonna put the new chain in, as the heads a bit tappety will I be alrite nickin sum buckets from the 9a/kr spare engines I've got and droppin em in?

Multi layered steel I'm guessing?

MLS = multi layer steel / multi layer shim depending on what book you look in
they are much toughr than the composite type and far more long liv ed than copper ones
