Title: Help Please - Engine cut out
Post by: GCGTI on 22 December 2010, 20:43
Please can anyone help......

My Golf Mk3 Gti 8v 1994 started up fine today, first turn of the key, i drove the car approximately 500 yards until i went over a small speed bump, the car coughed a little and i thought it was just my poor clutch control but it died. It now turns over fine but will not start. Roadside recovery has looked at it and failed to get it to start, sadly it now arrived home on the back of a recovery truck.

IF ANYONE CAN HELP OR ADVISE PLEASE DO!!

Many thanks.

Dodgy coil or moisture in the distributor cap. Remove the cap (make note of what HT leads go where) and dry it throughout with paper towel. Refit, spray WD40 all over it, and inside the pins where the HT leads connect to, spray the HT leads themselves (inside) and refit.  Try that, if it fails then start looking at coilpack (they are very commmon to go in these engines) or maybe something more serious like a bad sensor somewhere.

Thanks i'll give it a go in the morning. I notice on several other threads people talking about the crankshaft sensor, is this the one you are pointing towards if your other advise doesn't work.

Yup. It's not too much of a pain to change. However for very easy access I removed the front end of the car and the front engine mount and bracket.

May I add that getting the car scanned with vagcom will point out any sensor faults, so before spending money on sensor that may not be faulty, have the car scanned/buy a cheap vagcom lead off ebay (£10) and scan it.

Thanks. As getting a courier to delivery a parcel these days is like trying to get a penalty at Old Trafford can you recommend any 'high street' suppliers??

>or maybe something more serious like a bad sensor somewhere
if roadside recovery couldn't get it to start (assume thats AA / etc) would suggest crank or cam sensors personally.  I think they'd manage a lack-of-spark issue.

>May I add that getting the car scanned with vagcom will point out any sensor faults
no it doesn't always.  mine was faulty (wire convering burnt away) but still "in tollerance" so no faults logged.  Also will cost the OP ££ depending if he is going to a garage.

Crank would be my bet.

I think before spending £60 on a crank sensor it's worth checking over a few other bits.

Thanks for all the input. I am very grateful to you all. I am also amazed at how common this seems to be, page after page can be found on this topic and unfortunately there does not seem to be a definitive solution, therefore if you read this post and have anything to add please do.

Because everyone's engines are in different conditions. Where as one may have bad wiring other may have dampness and another may have just wear and tear.

As I said, coil is a common part that fails on the golfs.

what engine code is it? if you're unsure, does it have an ISV?

My best guess would be in this order:

Crank position sensor
ECU relay #30
Fuel pump relay #167
Coil pack
Dirty throttle body (although would likley start up again when tried)

There are pages and pages of 'cutting out' threads and if it's electrical it can be difficult to trace as some faults only show on VAGCOM when they occur and are not stored in the memory. Just had my crank position sensor replaced and all sorted now.

Best of luck!

 :cry:Still not got my pride back on the road, replaced the ecu relay and the fuel pump relay no good. Got it towed to a garage  and they have told me there is no spark at the plugs or the dizzy and that they think it is the dizzy. They want to remove it and test it? they have quoted me a staggering £250 to replace it plus labour, Eurocar parts list one for £75.... not f@@king impressed!!!

Reading some of your informed threads it seems to me that if there is no spark at the dizzy you guys suggest it is the coil pack can anyone confirm this thinking??

Eurocar parts has the coil pack for £35 so i guess the garage will quote me about £150!!!!!

no spark is one of at least two things; a bad coil or the ECU not realising it should be triggering the coil.  The crank/cam sensors tell the ECU when to spark - i.e. you could have everything else 100% but if the ECU doesn't see the signal - it won't trigger a spark.

does it have an isv? if not, its agg/ady and the problem is likely to be the crank sensor or the coil. its not the dizzy, you can unplug the hall sensor completly and it'll still run!

if its got an isv the code is 2e and it doesnt have a crank sensor, so in that case it'll be dizzy or coil

   Finally back on the road. Sourced a second hand Dizzy with ht leads, dizzy cap and rota arm on ebay for £17 shipped   Garage fitted it for me and we are back in business!!

On with the next job/s now, noisy wheel bearing and front wheels dont seem to be lined up????? ie position in the arch is not the same, nearside seems further out of the arch than the offside  :undecided: any opinions / help welcome.
