Are the chains rattling? If not then I wouldn't bother changing them, it's a lot of work and very costly.

If looked after, chains shouldn't generally need replacing :) need to look at any obvious rust / repairs that have been made, also check what state the sills are in :afro:

When I bought my VR i left it to run and made sure all the fans came on so there was no over heating issues.Check all the other mk3 soft spots the floor theirs rubber type bungs in the floor that attract rot along with the sills near the front where people jack the car up and cause alot of damage which over time turns to rust.Bottom of the wings suffer bad along with the wheel arches, top of the windscreen, tailgate and loom holes by the tailgate.Look out for the air bag and abs light both should light up when you start the car and then go off if they dont light up usually the plugs been disconnected so they dont light up.Put the car on full lock both directions listen for any clicking sounds usually cv joints or drive shaft problems and I always reverse the car sounds mad but people never check reverse lol.

also have a good smell in the car for antifreez, take out the front foot carpets and feel for any moist and around the center console, the heater matrix tends to leak, the part will cost no more than £50 but to replace it you need to take out the whole dash.done mine and its not a pleasent job but its worth it-not paying £250 to £500 for labour.also check the abs and airbag warning lights, they should come on for a second or two when u start it,if they stay lid,not good.rust is the main thing to look out for, take your time and dont rush it.i love my vr to death but bad mpg comes with all the excitement and insurance is mad even on third party, fire and theft.

good luck my man and report back to us

Cant believe no one has told you to keep an eye on the ABS light  :undecided:

I thing i fell victim to that  how ever mine was just a sensor clip.

Just make sure when you start it the abs light goes out. its located on the right hand side of the dash  pretty much above the lights switch.

Problems there could also be very very expensive

Im not keen on de-badged grills either it does look ok but being black you will proably find a badged one same colour if you keep and eye out and sell the de badged one  which fetch £15 upwards pay for your new one if you change it.Ive seen a genuine VR6 splitter on ebay £15  think once youve done that front ends sweet.Maybe joey mod the headlights will look nice aswell.
