Just done it in my dinner hour from work on my Mk3 GTi but should be fairly similar on all.? Got the oil and 17mm socket from Halfords, stuck the car on ramps to give greater clearance.? One word of advice, check that both the drain plug AND level plug undo a little bit before draining it all out.? Mine did, but I still checked first.? Drained in about 2 mins, plug back in, drain plug out and refill.? You can do it with the wheel on but there is a little bit of "persuasion" needed on the oil bottle but its plastic so isn't a problem.? Put the level plug back in, off the ramps, sorted.
Car feels smoother and a little quieter and it gives me piece of mind that the oil in there is in good condition.? BTW, I used Castrol Drivetrain Syntrax, I think the bill came to about ?27 for the oil and tools.
Secondly, I rang VW to ask how much oil it needed and they said 4 litres? ,so I felt the need to laugh down the phone at them and question their engineering abilities
Thought I would post it to explain how easy it is.

2 litres of oil is what required.
Just to explain it properly to people, the refill hole is ALSO what you use to check the level.
Its a lot easier to refill it using an old washing machine hose.
The gearbox is properly filled when the oil starts to trickle back out of the filler plug hole.
This MUST be done with the car on the wheels, on a LEVEL surface, NOT jacked up.
