Hey guys, right today is the 2nd time in 2 weeks my heaters wont heat up. The temp is at 90 as it should be and im just wondering if this is down to being near -12 last night and today its -7 so... I popped out there for 10 mins to drop the missus off at her work and they werent heating up.
Can anyone suggest why this is happening?

new stat time? whats that? I thought it may be down to a waterpump thing? I have read up about the pumps going and my temp gauge is dropping now and again over this bad weather and i had look through the mountains of vwsh ive got lol and no sign of waterpump done so i thought t 70000 miles wud it be about time to get that done lol.

If the temp gauge is fluctuating , change the thermostat and temp sender first, much cheaper and easier. Then look at the waterpump if that doesn't solve it.

Ok so Rich its defo not the waterpump then? If so then great as i realised it aint very cheap to have done. Would a garage cost a forture for thermostat so be done. I'd rather it was done properly than me f**king about with it.

No the car would be over heating if it was the pump :smiley:
Im 99.9% sure it will be your thermostat :smiley:
A garage should be able to do the job for around £50 - £60 i would guess :smiley:

Right just off fone to 4 diff garages that are involved with VW. They all said the exact same thing. It would be the waterpump. I got VW themselves in the end with a price of £194 inc vat. All four of them wudnt touch the thermostat and they all explained the same thing to me which made my think it has to be that. After a little white lie about price i got VW down from 293 to 194 so thought i cant miss this as the waterpumps actually start to go around my millege anyways and theres no sign of it ever being done.

If you're temperature gauge is dropping off then your thermostat is faulty
As Rich has already stated if your temp gauge was above 90 then your water pump is goosed
If you're getting VW to replace the pump then get the cambelt done at the same time as it has to be removed anyway. I'm amazed they didn't advise you to do that and try and rape more money off you

Ive got a fair bit of free cash to do this atm so it wont harm the car to get this done. Plus VW give you a 2 year warranty on the waterpump or unlimited millege they said so sounds fine. Plus I got a free courtesy valet, wash and wax added to that lol.

If the pump has gone the water wont be circulating so could cause the heaters not to work :undecided:
It would still overheat however :huh:

Cheapest repair is replace the stat and anti-freeze. If that cures your problem then you've saved money. If it doesn't well there was no harm in replacing the stat and the anti-freeze would be changed when you have the water pump replaced anyway

You could see if water is circulating in the water tank with the engine running - check the top hose :smiley:
Also feel the other pipes around the engine bay to see if they have hot water going through them :wink:

Right guys apologies. Just foned the next citys VW and the guy said the same as use... If it were the waterpump temps wud be soaring so its defo not that. He said it could be down to the anti-freeze not being strong enough in which means they arent being able to run through pipes as normal. He said this could be all fixed for £35 plus VAT. So not a dear job.
Should I fone back that guy and give him grief at Dundee VW! haha.

Sounds much better!! Seems a little cheap as I bet that doesn't include replacing the thermostat :undecided: Just sounds like its replacing the anti-freeze

If you are still unsure take it to a VW specialist and with a few free simple checks you will know for sure :smiley:

Right booked into another VW to get Anti-Freeze done, He said if it were the thermostat then the needle wudnt rise to 90 degrees. So we'll do the Anti-freeze and take it from there.

Right guys im back from VW. Just had a Diagnostic done on the car. Turns out it is the waterpump playing up. I seen with my own eyes during all this and the guy showed me the system on the computer showing whats what. Coolant check turned out fine, Sitting at -25 which is what VW recommend. So after all the fuss and a nice wee chat with the Service bloke i now have myself booked in on Tuesday to have waterpump done and also Thermostat even though the needle is reaching 90. The heaters themselves started to work on way to VW (Typical) but I defo know whats what now.
Price: £200 inc VAT. Plus thermostat.
Whos wanting sue'd first? Rhyso or Rich haha kidding..

Interesting. What sort of diagnostics did he do?? Might be worth writing up what you saw as a pointer to other people :smiley:

What about your cambelt?? Has that been changed recently because it will be coming off anyway

Timing belt was done last November before i bought it, reciept etc there. However they never got the waterpump done at the same time which they should have..
As for Diagnostic he plugged it into car on the dash bit thats all i know, by the time i got into workshop the car was on it.

Hmm I'm intrigued to that as I would have thought the water pump is more of a visual inspection rather than a computer diagnostic :undecided:

Well i cudnt tell ya i know nothing about cars really. He had an inspection of pipes before it went on Diagnostic and checked coolant with this telescope thing lol

That just checks the condition of the anti-freeze. Sounds like he got the car running and just checked the flow of water around the system

Well whatever it is its getting fixed on tuesday. Cudnt believe it when he said £293.89 first time and i said right well leave it there im gona check around for prices then get back to u alright... "yeh no probs". Call back 30 mins later... Hi i got a price at 194 inc vat, "right well lets see if we can match that hold on please" ..... few secs later... "Yes Mr Beattie we can, that'll be £200 inc vat hows that?" ... Fab. Hahahaha. Its funny how they can adjust prices to whatever u make up :P Gotta try it sometime!

Well as im only a year into driving i havent found myself a good local garage yet lol. still waiting for something to go wrong on my car haha. This will be the first time since ive had it that its had to go get something done.

How about taking the stat out and actually feeling the pump? If it is the pump I'm very surprised you haven't overheated yet.
