interior is all wrong, guessing this is due to SA import? :undecided:

nah not SA, look at the C pillar if it was a citi it would have a big crease on it. i recon its a euro spec model, ordered by someone in the armed forces based on the continent. either that or its some kind of gl thats been converted to gti spec. looks like a very oem engine install though, plus it has the mfa. check out the centre console as well!
check out engine/box codes on the boot sticker or service book, that'll tell you if engine is original
-
When I worked @ TSR we had a 5dr GTI in, that was from SA so it is 100% genuine.
The citi Golf came in 1984, before that they built euro spec from 1978 to late 1983.

Looks pretty genuine to me.... defo not a citi shell.
quote from sale
This car has the original VW Motor Port, Cape Town, South Africa Bill of Sale, Registration Certificate from Cape Town, South Africa, the South African Export Papers, the UK Import Papers, the UK V5C, all confirming this is a genuine VW Golf GTI Mk 1 Silver 1.8 litre 5 door.

Bearing in mind it's all OEM in SA terms at least, the main reasons it looks weird IMO is because
A) it's a 5 door
b) seats and carpet - wrong
c) center console - wrong
d) front GTI badge - wrong
e) Front VW badge is silver
f) no red grille surround
g) single side decal - wrong
h) wheels - wrong
i) chrome trim bumpers - wrong
j) doesn't appear to have green tint windows
k) somebody has added extra replectors front and rear
l) Interestingly it seems to have a Wolfsburg steering wheel???
I once found a very very rare version of my car... I wish I still had info on it...
A bespoke factory built (Wolfsburg), black 5 door GTI with leather interior that was then prepared by Richard Lloyd (like mine), Same engine and body.

I have always fancied one of these GTI's for some odd reason.

Not at all, I've always quite fancied one, not a GTI though. Already have one of those... Quite fancy this though.

I always liked my mates 1.5 GX he had many years ago now it just seemed more finished than the GTI :embarassed:

Not many of those left now, not in bad condition really.

Yeah i think they're a tad more comfortable. GTI is a GTI though, GX is more of a little cruiser.

I think it also came with the long range fuel tank that used the spare wheel well, not sure but this was an option and this car had pretty much all of them when I saw it for sale a long time back... I believe its the same engine as mine underneath it all. RLR 8v plus pac with around 135-140 bhp. I'd be surprised if mines still pumping out OEM horses at the moment let alone the extra it was given all those years ago.. :lipsrsealed:

droool   oh my..

I used to visit GTI Engineering regularly back in the 80's and I'm sure I saw this once. Like all Mk1's, it is a thing of beauty

Was it factory built or converted by RLR

Was it factory built or converted by RLR
As far as I am aware it was RLR built with assistance from VW, probably for correct parts. not sure what the base car was to start with.

When I was working at TSR we had another 5dr GTI in for repairs, that was black, built in SA, that had the same features / trim as a 3dr GTI.
We were told at the time that VW had imported 5 in total to see if there was a market to sell more.

Maybe this one was the same, all I know for sure is that the engine, interior, wheels and suspension were sorted by RLR. Certainly a better example than the one I posted at the begining of this thread.

That black car so makes me want to build a 5 door GTI

Why not, if it means i get another mk1 play with. Seriously though my other half would go mad if something like that ended up here before I finish the one I've got... She has a hard enough time dealing with that one as it is.
