I noticed this a short while ago while stuck in traffic, and noticed it again recently. Basically, my car seems to have awful efficiency when it's static and idling. I think that I use about quarter of a tank when I was sat in heavy traffic, and used about a tenth when sat in traffic for 10 minutes or so.
Has anybody else experience this at all?
I'm thinking it's time for an oil change at least..

Well you're hardly likely to get good fuel consumption standing still! Think about it, you've got your aircon blower, heating, radio, possibly lights and other things running, probably on a cold-ish engine ensuring the oil is thicker and thus has more drag on moving surfaces.
If you want to cut your fuel economy whilst idling turn the engine off and pretend you've got an Ecomotive/Bluemotion type car (or Formel E if you're as old as me).

My GTD yesterday bottomed at 4.3mpg on average. Doh!!!!

I'm aware that I won't get good economy whilst sat still, but I don't expect to use near quarter of a tank in about 15 minutes having only moved about a mile if that.
Just an observation more than a rant, to see if anyone else gets the same experience.

if your stuck in traffic your not likely to get many MILES to the gallon

Imagine how I feel I have Clifford remote start and its a Golf R

Imagine how I feel I have Clifford remote start and its a Golf R
I would imagine you feel quite warm most of the time.
Are these things expensive? I wouldn't mind one for my old Ibiza as the poor thing sits out in my works car park and has to be started at 5 in the morning every day. Would be nice to walk out of my living hell office into a warm car instead of spending ages chipping ice off of it whilst I wait for the engine and cabin to warm up (I'm a scraper not a de-icer sprayer).

How did they get round the clutch having to be pressed before the car would start?
I'm sure I read when the GTI just came out across the pond the only way to install a remote start was to basically remove the ignition barrel and have a key permanently in it hidden under the dash!! How this got round the depressed clutch though I haven't a clue.

I wouldn't say average the average is memory 2 its more like actual memory 1.
Mine was showing 8mpg after I drove off this morning thats the lowest I've ever seen it but I was moving. It will normally show 17mpg when you reading first shows.
I've just read you're link http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=153115.0
Golf GTD Whirr
The whirr that I am complaining to VW about. Clunk is going into gear and whir returns when pedal lifted. They think its normal.
No thats not normal there is something wrong with that which is worse than my
Clutch pedal pulsating/vibrating (http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/f19/clutch-pedal-pulsating-vibrating-2915/)
Clutch pedal pulsating/vibrating 2 (http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8028)
which they say is normal.
-
Similar experience for me, but I was moving. Due to the snow, motorway last night was crawling. Was doing a steady 40mph used almost double the petrol I normally do doing the exact same journey. crazy.
-
i think i'm about one third a tank left and the odometer said i'd done about 190 miles or something. i can usually get that mileage on around half a tank comfortably. i guess having the heaters at full blast and just driving more slowly with less efficiency just adds up.

Sorry I meant the average of Computer 1 was showing 4.3mpg and no lower, whilst sitting in straffic. for that Journey. VW will do nothing about any clunks whirrs until it falls off. I have just ignored it for now, no worse in 11,000 miles.

Mate if your cars using a tankful if you sit at idle for an hour you must have a leak?

DSG for you next time?
Who at VW said this is normal?
-
Remember you get 0mpg when idling
-
Ajmoir: As Doc says, you must have a leak. I've never been as low as 4.3 mpg. I think you've broken a record.

Everybody (dealer and VWCS), wrote two letters of complaint to VWCS, got told to get lost basically they dont care.

The Remote Start cost £175 plus a clifford alarm is required"alarm cost £600", I chose the Cocept 650 with Canbus Feature so the alarm basically talks to the ECU rather than override it. The chip from your spare key is also fitted in the alarm for the factory imobiliser thing.

My car is specced with dsg so no need for clutch pressing, the spare keys chip is inside the alarm in the dash to override the factory immobiliser, when you start it via remote you cant drive it until you place the other key in the ignition.

My mate had a similar set up in his Sierra Cossy (a few years ago now), brilliant for the winter.
My missus wants to have this in her Corsa, during the cold weather. It would cost more than the value of her car !

It is a good bit of kit, you can get it cheaper if you buy the advant guard series and ask for the remote start on that, when you sell your corsa take it off and fit it to the new car. Another cool feature is the mobile phone kit where your car can text you. Really good if your board and no one else to txt.
