Title: Clearing snow?
Post by: Jimble on 19 December 2010, 10:02
So what does everyone use to clear thick snow from their car? I just read that steve used warm water but wouldn't that take ages?

the snow around bham is quite soft than usual, cant even make snow balls out of it, lol, so itll come off quite easy, but ive resorted to using the ice scraper

the car aint been cleaned for weeks so im dreading seeing the scratches once its cleaned, although a mate thought it funny to write 'turbo' onto my drivers door with his finger, (as i dont have one) so no doubt that will scratch

thanks mate...

I would take the worst off with your hands and then wash the rest off with some warm water.

You can put some salt on the floor where the water falls to help stop it freezing and ice forming.

If you use a brush you do run the risk of scratching the paint but if you know a good detailer you can get it all done in the spring and should be back to beautiful. In conditions like this, however, it's all about damage limitation. How about getting hold of a dust sheet and covering the car when you're not using it, that way you can just lift the cloth off when you want to use the car?

The dust pan from a dust pan and brush. There plastic, light and act like a small shovel plus mine has a rubber edge so it wont scratch

unfortunately a non option for me due to the area that i live, as some little chavs will find it funny to set fire to it! (or their jobless social scrounging parents will knick it!)

I have found a use for my Autoglym Hydra blade and that is getting snow off all the windows, I knew it would be good for something one day

Not something I'd try as the water may freeze on the drive and god knows what would happen when driving on and off the drive, fortunately I dont have to though as mines kept in a garage

with a stiff brush or a shovel you are sure to remove any doubt as to how much damage you're doing

Tis true i suppose! I'm in a similar sort of situation as Tazzy in that the local yoof would find it hilarious to mess about with whatever cover i put over it! I'd love a garage and i have the space just not enough money! i think i'll carry on with my soft brush for now if some are using rubber blades with no bother as it's quite a bit softer than say, a jetwash brush.
Thanks for the replies,

Be nice if we could go fast enough!

the ironic thing for me is, is that i have a garage, but its about 3 miles from my house, so the car cant be stored, plus ive got the show car in there, and as much as i love my golf, i love my corsa more (£15k more!) to add, i also have a pressure washer, but its broke, and its also at the garage, to help things along, i live in a first story flat...

in short, my car stays dirty and covered in snow/dirt/grit/ice till i can get the car to a mates to clean it! lol

the right pedal
haven't had much snow, just start the car up, put on back heated screen and wiper blades once to get rid of top layer of snow then use an ice scraper to get snow off the remaining windows, then jump in the car with the heaters on full and get the feeling in your body back..

I get an extension cable and put an electric blanket over the top of my car for a couple of minutes. Sparks a little but theres no snow on my car anymore. Looks like my paint has been put in a bbq but thats what resprays/detailers are for eh?

all you need is a calor gas bottle, a lighter, a bit of hose and a suitable adaptor from hosepipe to gas bottle.

Oh and someone to film it
