Title: Car not starting, mmm. taxis are expensive.
Post by: 0scar on 17 December 2010, 14:21
Hey there,
Normally I would use the search function to narrow down the issue. But im hungover and the words are hurting my eyes.
If one of you guys can narrow down the issue, would save me alot of time.

Car used to start first time everytime, but over the last week it slowly degraded, taking several turnovers. (would also have to press the gas to bring it to life or it grumbled)
The battery is fully charged, I can hear the fuel pump kicking in.
But! the car wont start at all today, just turns over and over.

Have a mechanic and just had its MOT recently, so everything else is working how it should, quite smooth/fast etc. (unbalanced revving at idle, but its snowing so it gets let off for that)

Another strange thing that has been happening recently is that the oil light lamp symbol would flash when the keys are turned.
Not normal flashing though, really fast. So maybe a bad earth somewhere? My mechanic did redo all the earths a few weeks back and it worked great so hopefully not that.

Anyway! If someone knows how to fix it or where to start would be great.
Im at the computer now, expecting a quick response is unrealistic but would help no end.

Thanks, Oscar

Got petrol in it???

When did you last have it serviced?

hey, thanks for the quick response.
Full tank of petrol and serviced recently. All oil/coolant levels correct etc.
Went straight through the MOT not more than a week ago.

Hopefully you are less hungover now and could possibly use the search function. Or will just wait for ben to publish his checklist.

Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key?

I'd guess fuel pump relay, 5th injector (cold start enrichment) or WUR. I wouldn't mess with it until the car stops starting.

Depress your clutch to reduce drag on starting in colder weather. Check your starter motor lead also has enough capacity to take the extra amps from the battery too. Mine used to be a nightmare on cold mornings until I uprated the battery lead.
