I have only one key for my car, but I still have my old written off car which I have a set of three keys for. I was planning to change the locks over but I've been thinking if it would be easier to get some spares cut of my present key than having to to remove the ignition barrel on two cars. How much would it cost to get keys cut and does an ordinary "key cutter"(?) do this?

Well Duh!
Aye. Get a spare cut at your local market cobbler.

You can get new VW Key blanks from the dealers I think...
But Deffo from VW Classic parts in Germany... http://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/shop/
5 Euro each...
