Title: Which gearbox?
Post by: HuwMk2 on 16 December 2010, 19:21
Hi all. Need a new gearbox for my 1992 8v. Will any 8v gti gearbox fit or do I need one with a specific code?

Also, out of interest, are 16v and 8v boxes the same?

Thanks,

Huw

They have a different sized input shaft IIRC.

8v 020 should do you ;)

020 AUG is a like for like, but the earlier ACD box from the pre-90 8v GTI should fit as well.

The AUG has a slightly taller 2nd so that you can get to 62mph without changing to 3rd

16v is same as the earlier ACD box in terms of ratios, except it has a shorter 5th so higher revs when cruising on motorway plus slightly lower top speed. there isnt a massive amount in it though:

as ben says 16v box has a bigger input shaft, so need a 16v clutch friction disc. you'll want to put a new clutch on unless its pretty new while the box is off anyway. 2.0 8v gearbox fits as well, has taller ratios than the mk2 gti boxes and has the same input shaft as the 16v mk2 box.

when you swap box i would replace the input shaft seal, plus the pushrod bush & seal
