think on 96 + the ecu ignition and key have transponders. so without the chip in key your fooked and need all 3 i think.

All you need is a key (any key with a chip in it) and the matching ignition lock.

Then via vagcom and vagtacho you can recode the new key's chip to the ECU immobilizer.

can only recode if you have got the SKC, and you can only get that if you have a matched key in the ignition :(

if you do get a new chipped key make sure you get the transponder box to match, then you can match your ecu to it with vag-com.  the problem comes when trying to match a key to a transponder box, this is when you need the SKC.

vw can cut you a new key based on your vin, and can also code it to your transponder box but this means transporting the car to them.  VW can request an unlock code for the immobiliser box which gets around the SKC problem.

I could do you a good deal on a:

ECU
Transponder
Key + chip
Ignition Barrel
Door lock

All from a 1997 GTI engine code AGG

Your sorted then ;)
