Title: SmartGuard
Post by: Jimmymature on 15 December 2010, 21:23
Hi all, just bought a used MK6 GTI today

They showed me details of SmartGuard and looked good.  Can I have views & opinions of it and is it worth the money?

Cheers,

Jim

How much are they charging?

It really depends if you can be bothered doing it or not,  this kit  (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SmartGuard-Deluxe-Car-Cleaning-Kit-/120659172268?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c17d8dbac)cost cost just over £50

Its usually Lifeshine  (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUTOGLYM-LIFESHINE-FULL-PROFESSIONAL-CAR-TREATMENT-KIT-/280602888005?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item41553c4745)that VW use which can be had for under £20 but some folk are willing to pay them £300 for the privilege of VW applying it!!

Personally I think I would do a more thorough job than some sponge monkey applying it. There is no way on this earth that it lasts 3 years that they claim. Get yourself a decent detailing set for half the price and apply it yourself. You'll take a hell of a lot more pride in it.

+ its always good to do the work yourself when you buy a new or nearly new car as when you wash and wax the car yourself your more likely to  find any bodywork imperfections that may need addressing by the dealer.

To apply all that correctly would probably take at least half a day, possibly longer, I didn't think the £295 was an outrageous price to pay.
It will last longer than 3 years, the idea is that you still polish/wax the car thus adding to the protection and enhancing the finish further

Each to their own but for me £295 would be a complete rip off.
You could more or less have your paint corrected for that amount and then sealed which would give a far superior finish.
If you are polishing the car then the chances are you are removing the lifeshine.
I'm sorry but to me its snake oil.
Treating the inside of the car is certainly beneficial as most folk don't. But a good water repellent will do the trick.

I've had my car toughsealed and it is great protection against UV light, chemical rain, bird droppings etc. Really brings the colour out also.

I fell for this scam when I bought my Leon Cupra in 2002. I paid £250 for the Diamondbrite treatment.

To be fair, if you're not as fussy as most of us on here about the condition of your car, then it's ok. It makes the car easier to wash and keeps the car looking about 75% as well as it could if you cared for it yourself. However, it will not prevent swirls and maring that you can easily pick up even with carefull hand washing. You only have to look at the majority of dark coloured cars on the road on a sunny day to see what I mean. These marks will need to be "polished" out and any correction work will remove these sealants anyway.

Personally, a decent wax and carefull washing will look after your car far better.
