hello guys, I have a mrk4 GTI and love it i have had it a few years now but want an upgrade and love the mrk 5 but dont no whether to get a GTI or an R32 as there is is not as much of a price difference as i first thought, i personally prefere the R32 but i dont no what there like when remapped. So which one do you people suggest???? thanks
-
Have you driven either of them?
That would be my advice. Try and drive them back to back on the same day and pick which one you prefer. Don't rule out an ED30 either mind
-
i dont think i will be able to afford an edition 30 i should have about £11,500 to spend but really dont no what to get i have been searching on here and it says the R32 cant be mapped is this true? I have not driven either yet as i havent got all the money yet im still saving but just wanted to get a bit of a rough idea first from you guys.
-
You can remap the .:R's but you won't see much gain for your money as they are normally aspirated
Go test drive a few and make your mind up - don't worry about not having the money just yet!!
Also price up the insurance side of things and also the long term running costs. The R32 does like a drop of the go-go juice so if you're doing a far amount of miles that's going to have a big impact on your wallet especially with the way ever increasing petrol prices. There's also the tax to consider too.
But go and drive a few examples first :afro:
-
yeh i will after christmas i think, the main reason i want the R is the noise they make i love it i dont really do loads of miles so shouldnt be to bad i only work 10 miles from my house so will only be doing 20 miles a day most days is the tax £400 a year?

Depending on when it was registered I believe so the later the model, the higher the tax bracket
-
the ones i have been looking at are around 06 plates. I think there 250 bhp do you no roughly what an R Tech map would take one to???

260ish at a guess :undecided: You won't see great peak gains but the midrange should be stronger.
-
and the gti would go to 240 with the map i think i read somewhere so surely the r32 would be quicker running 260 and with 4 wheel drive wouldnt it???

About that.
Depends on the conditions and the driver. Also consider the R32 is heavier to start with so power-to-weight ratio might be about the same
-
so yeh very similar then i think i prefere the R32 though thats without driving them of course so i might change my mind after that and im pretty sure i could afford to keep one well looked after.
-
I would recommend a GTI, have not driven the R32. The things that put me off the R are the higher road tax, poorer fuel consumption and the extra weight it has over the GTI being 4wd & a larger engine.
-
yeh theres so many things for and against though, personally i love the fact its such a big engine i think until i drive them though i am decided on the R32.
-
Edition 30 is the best of the bunch, and can be had within your Budget.
Std Ed30 is quicker then the R from a rolling start.
Remap it for £500 and you have a Porsche eater
-
I can pick one up in that price range but it would be one with quite high mileage and I want one with low as possible im not going to go over 50,000 miles. Can anyone tell me if the R32 has the flappy paddle gear shift or not?
-
R32s can come with manual or DSG boxes. DSG is the one with paddle shifts. I've driven a DSG R32, not hard or anything just a quick bit around town and out a main road shortly. It was a nice drive, as normal with the mk5, plenty comfortable but the noise is simply one of the greatest sounds ever imo. Drive an R32 and the noise alone may sway you over the GTI. It swayed me and I'll be getting one the second I can afford it  Can't wait for that day.
-
Rhyso hit the nail on the head. It's all about personal preference if you can afford both. Take them both out and see which you prefer. I'd love an R32 for the noise and 4WD but just can't justify the petrol and tax cost. A remapped GTI vs an R32 would be nothing in it really. Add a full turbo back exhaust and a small induction kit with a stage 2 map and your laughing.
Good luck with the hunt.

One thing about the VW Golf GTI is that it is a class act. For the mk5 the classiest is the R32 (though not really a GTI) followed by the regular GTI, with the fully painted special editions coming in last (a whiff of Halfords here). The new mk6 GTI does not look very classy (too regular Golf) except for the R model which is a true gent.

I have had a look on autotrader and I have gone right up to nearly £20,000 and none of them say anything about the dsg model, are they really rare or more expensive then that or what? I don't really get how to find out if there that model or not cos that's the one I would love but dont no if there way out of my price range
-
The R32 is more costly to run.
The one to buy is a standard GTI with DSG. If it's too slow (and it isn't really) then remap it for an extra 40 bhp.
You save money and have car of the year (autocar gave the standard GTI five stars, it only gave the ED30 and R32 four stars).
Simple

Don't listen to the forum troll.
-
Would still rather the R32 even though it's more expensive it's not like it's an evo or something as expensive as that I just want to no why I can't find a used one with the dsg gearbox on autotrader????
-
Have you set the search for AUTOMATICS? And engine size above 3 litres?
I've found about 20
-
No I have been searching semi automatic
-
Autoexpress did an item on buying a GTI.
Their conclusion was just to buy an unmodified real GTI.
Simple

That's why I bought bluefin. It can be removed by me when I come to sell.
Just because I don't like the ED30 does not make me a troll, you know.
